{"id":214392,"date":"2025-09-10T02:39:21","date_gmt":"2025-09-10T02:39:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/214392\/"},"modified":"2025-09-10T02:39:21","modified_gmt":"2025-09-10T02:39:21","slug":"shameful-freed-hostages-chide-lawmakers-for-lack-of-support-and-compassion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/214392\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Shameful&#8217;: Freed hostages chide lawmakers for lack of support and compassion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Addressing the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, freed hostages Iair Horn and Sharon Alony Cunio on Tuesday demanded the return of those remaining in Hamas captivity, blaming lawmakers and the government for failing to secure their release.<\/p>\n<p>Alony Cunio, who was freed in a November 2023 hostage-ceasefire deal along with her two young daughters, Yuli and Emma, but whose husband David Cunio and brother-in-law Ariel Cunio remain hostage, said that lawmakers were doing \u201cthe exact opposite of bringing [the hostages] back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy aren\u2019t you by our side \u2014 is it because they\u2019re not your family members?\u201d she asked members of the key defense panel. \u201cHow much longer will I lie to my daughters, telling them [that their father will be released] any minute now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much more can I take? This is daily abuse. Why do I have to come here and reopen my trauma just to fight for my husband and brother-in-law?\u201d she said. \u201cThere are things I experienced in captivity that I can\u2019t talk about because I\u2019m so ashamed. Why don\u2019t we hear from you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She declared, \u201cIt\u2019s shameful that you have not a shred of compassion for us or for them. I\u2019m sorry I have to come and disrupt your agenda just to remind you that there are still 48 hostages there. I\u2019m at home with two 5-year-old girls, broken. And every day I\u2019m broken anew. Every day you kill us again. Us and them,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The Cunio family was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/hostage-who-was-freed-with-daughters-vows-to-keep-fighting-for-husbands-return\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">taken by terrorists<\/a> from their home in Kibbutz Nir Oz on October 7, 2023. The family was dragged to Gaza on a stolen tractor and at one stage, lost track of Emma, then three.<\/p>\n<p>Sharon, David and Yuli were held for 10 days in a Palestinian home, before they were transferred to Nasser Hospital in Gaza\u2019s Khan Younis. Three days later, a man arrived and handed over Emma, whom they had not seen in nearly two weeks.<\/p>\n<p>\t<a href=\"https:\/\/static-cdn.toi-media.com\/www\/uploads\/2024\/11\/WhatsApp-Image-2024-10-31-at-11.38.00-1.jpeg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3412074 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/WhatsApp-Image-2024-10-31-at-11.38.00-1-640x400.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"400\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Sharon Aloni Cunio, David Cunio and their twins, Yuli and Emma, before the entire family was taken hostage on October 7, 2023 (Courtesy)<\/p>\n<p>Horn, who was abducted from his Nir Oz home on October 7 and released from Hamas captivity in February 2025 as part of a mediated ceasefire-hostage release deal, but whose brother Eitan remains captive, told the lawmakers a deal \u201cis probably the best way to release the rest of the hostages.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy heart is broken. What happened yesterday was another blow,\u201d he said, referring to the four IDF soldiers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/four-soldiers-killed-in-hamas-attack-on-army-camp-near-gaza-city-idf-says\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">killed in a Hamas attack<\/a> on the outskirts of Gaza City early Monday morning.<\/p>\n<p>Horn recalled an occasion on which he helped his younger brother Eitan run for his life in Gaza while Israeli forces bombed near the tunnel in which they were being held.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Eitan] is not a small person, nor is he athletic, and after the bomb you have to run because in addition to the missile there are poisonous gases,\u201d Horn said, sobbing. \u201cWhile running, he sat down and told me, \u2018Leave me here.\u2019 But this is my little brother, I will not give up on him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/WhatsApp-Image-2025-09-09-at-12.41.45.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3637746\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/WhatsApp-Image-2025-09-09-at-12.41.45.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1988\" height=\"1326\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>(L-R) Esther Buchshtab, Iair Horn, Sharon Alony Cunio and Yarden Bibas at the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee on September 9, 2025 (Ran Melamed\/Hostage and Missing Families Forum)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m stuck on October 7. The whole family is stuck. I\u2019ll probably never get over it. I\u2019ll cope, but I think the country is in distress, the people of Israel are in distress, and in order to begin to heal, we need to end this whole thing \u2014 the entire war \u2014 and bring back the hostages, and go back to trying to be something closer to a proper country and society,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/presumed-captive-argentine-immigrant-brothers-eitan-and-yair-horn\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Eitan Horn<\/a> was abducted from Iair\u2019s Nir Oz home on October 7. The Kfar Saba resident had gone to visit his brother for the holidays.<\/p>\n<p>The kibbutz was the community hardest hit during the Hamas-led onslaught, with 117 of its 400 residents either kidnapped or murdered during the massacre.<\/p>\n<p>Four men \u2014 Eitan Horn, David Cunio, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/topic\/ariel-cunio\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ariel Cunio<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/topic\/matan-zangauker\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Matan Zangauker<\/a> \u2014 are presumed to be the only remaining living hostages taken from Kibbutz Nir Oz.<\/p>\n<p>\t<a href=\"https:\/\/static-cdn.toi-media.com\/www\/uploads\/2025\/03\/eitan-iair-horn.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3493854 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/eitan-iair-horn-640x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"400\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Brothers Iair (L) and Eitan Horn in a Hamas propaganda video ahead of Iair\u2019s release from captivity in Feburary 2025. (Screen capture)<\/p>\n<p>The families of the hostages held in Gaza have said they are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/focus-of-mass-rallies-shifts-to-jerusalem-as-fears-grow-for-lives-of-the-hostages\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">deeply concerned<\/a> for their loved ones as the IDF\u2019s Gaza City operation intensifies, citing the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/a-year-to-murders-of-hostages-by-captors-family-warns-expanded-war-may-kill-others\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">murder of six hostages in a Rafah tunnel<\/a> last year as their captors heard Israeli troops nearing.<\/p>\n<p>According to Channel 13 news, the military admits it has incomplete intelligence on the locations of the hostages in Gaza, and has assessed that Hamas may try to move captives into Gaza City ahead of the intensified IDF operation there.<\/p>\n<p>IDF Chief of Staff Maj. Gen. Eyal Zamir has been widely reported to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/at-stormy-cabinet-meet-netanyahu-refuses-idf-chiefs-push-for-vote-on-hostage-deal\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">oppose<\/a> the Gaza City takeover plan, and has urged ministers from Netanyahu\u2019s hardline cabinet to instead reach a hostage-ceasefire deal. (Yonatan Sindel\/FLASH90)<\/p>\n<p>Zamir has reportedly tried to reassure the families of hostages, saying in a recent meeting with them that \u201cthe operation will be conducted by me, with responsibility toward the troops and the hostages,\u201d according to Channel 12 news.<\/p>\n<p>US President Donald Trump said Sunday that Israel had accepted the new US ceasefire-hostage proposal, and gave Hamas what he said was his \u201clast warning\u201d to sign on as well.
