(Photo by Chris Stone\/Times of San Diego)<\/p>\n<p>The San Diego County <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandiegocounty.gov\/content\/sdc\/bos.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Board of Supervisors<\/a> voted 4-1 Tuesday to expand the county\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/chrome-extension:\/\/efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj\/https:\/\/www.sandiegocounty.gov\/content\/dam\/sdc\/hhsa\/programs\/ssp\/documents\/Immigrant_Legal_Defense_Program-Flyer.pdf\">Immigrant Legal Defense Program<\/a> to include unaccompanied immigrant children.<\/p>\n<p>The vote broadens the county program that began in 2021 to provide legal representation for migrant children appearing in immigration court.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA fair day in court is impossible without a lawyer,\u201d Board Chair Terra Lawson-Remer said in a statement. \u201cExpecting a child to navigate immigration court \u2014 in a language they don\u2019t speak \u2014 against a federal prosecutor is not just unrealistic, it\u2019s unjust.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A statement from Lawson-Remer\u2019s office said that federal funding supporting legal representation for unaccompanied migrant children is set to expire at the end of the month.<\/p>\n<p>More than 300 migrant children are in San Diego County and her office said in a statement, \u201cWithout this local expansion, those children could be forced to represent themselves alone in court starting Oct. 1.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">With federal protections ending September 30, hundreds of kids could be forced to face deportation hearings without a lawyer.
