LOS ANGELES (AP) \u2014 Jimmy Kimmel<\/a> is no defender of democracy.<\/p>\n

At least he turned down the title when a reporter suggested he might be.<\/p>\n

\u201cThose are heavy thoughts and I have a tendency to reject them,\u201d he said backstage this weekend at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards<\/a>. \u201cI don\u2019t really feel like I\u2019m defending democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said he\u2019s doing something much smaller when he lays into President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m giving this guy a little poke, and he deserves it, and I enjoy it, and I hope that people enjoy it too,\u201d Kimmel said.<\/p>\n

As the 57-year-old TV personality spoke he was holding his fourth Primetime Emmy Award<\/a>, this one for best game show host for his helming of \u201cWho Wants to Be a Millionaire?\u201d He\u2019s up for another Sunday for \u201cJimmy Kimmel Live!\u201d<\/p>\n

Kimmel is, undoubtedly though, a defender of Stephen Colbert<\/a> \u2014 and voted for him too.<\/p>\n

When his friend and fellow late-night host Colbert had his \u201cLate Show\u201d canceled in July, three days after criticizing a settlement between Trump and CBS parent company Paramount Global<\/a> as it was seeking administration approval for a merger, Kimmel cursed CBS and shared his love for Colbert. Executives insisted the decision was financial.<\/p>\n

Later he erected a billboard in Los Angeles declaring \u201cI\u2019m voting for Stephen,\u201d throwing his endorsement to his opponent in their Emmy race in the talk series category.<\/p>\n

Kimmel was on a long vacation from ABC\u2019s \u201cJimmy Kimmel Live!\u201d when Colbert\u2019s cancellation happened, but weighed in when he returned last week.<\/p>\n

\u201cCBS, all of a sudden out of the blue, claimed \u2018The Late Show\u2019 was losing $40 million a year and then miraculously got FCC approval to sell their company, which is what they wanted,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He also responded to Trump, who posted on Truth Social, \u201cI hear Jimmy Kimmel is next,\u201d Trump wrote. \u201cHas even less talent than Colbert.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, you delicate, chubby little teacup, did we hurt your feelings?\u201d Kimmel said on his show. \u201cYou want us to be canceled because we make jokes about you. I thought you were against cancel culture.\u201d <\/p>\n

Somehow none of Kimmel\u2019s Emmys are for the late-night show he\u2019s hosted for 22 years \u2014 though most of his 27 nominations are. <\/p>\n

One is for hosting the Oscars. Two are for the special all-star recreations of old sitcoms he produced between 2019 and 2021, \u201cLive in Front of a Studio Audience.\u201d<\/a> Asked if he\u2019s given any thought to reviving those, he said not without his partner in the project, Norman Lear, who died at age 101<\/a> in 2023. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt would be too emotional to do it without Norman,\u201d Kimmel said. \u201cI don\u2019t know if my heart could take it.\u201d<\/p>\n

He\u2019s also a three-time Emmys host \u2014 a job that this year will go to Nate Bargatze when the show airs on CBS. <\/p>\n

And he won a daytime Emmy as best game show host for his work on Comedy Central\u2019s \u201cWin Ben Stein\u2019s Money\u201d way back in 1999, before the award got promoted to primetime.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen we won that Emmy, we went on the air the same week \u2018South Park\u2019 went on the air, and Comedy Central was not a channel that many people watched,\u201d Kimmel said at the Creative Arts Emmys. \u201cAnd we were up against these titans, the same shows we\u2019re up against now, \u2018Wheel of Fortune\u2019 and \u2018Jeopardy.\u2019 We didn\u2019t know anyone was watching the show. I think it was the first Emmy Comedy Central ever won.\u201d<\/p>\n

Asked how long he plans to keep his current show going, he kept it vague.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not prepared to answer that question, but it is something I think about a lot,\u201d he said with a smile. \u201cEach day is a new adventure, and I kind of take them as they come, is that a good way of dodging the question?\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"LOS ANGELES (AP) \u2014 Jimmy Kimmel is no defender of democracy.
