{"id":216216,"date":"2025-09-10T18:56:14","date_gmt":"2025-09-10T18:56:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/216216\/"},"modified":"2025-09-10T18:56:14","modified_gmt":"2025-09-10T18:56:14","slug":"sapd-names-officer-in-shooting-of-knife-wielding-teen-on-south-side","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/216216\/","title":{"rendered":"SAPD names officer in shooting of knife-wielding teen on South Side"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 kNAFkD cuqaEv article-text\"><strong>SAN ANTONIO<\/strong> \u2013 San Antonio police have identified the officer accused of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/local\/2025\/09\/08\/sapd-chief-to-provide-details-on-south-side-shooting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/local\/2025\/09\/08\/sapd-chief-to-provide-details-on-south-side-shooting\/\">shooting a 16-year-old boy<\/a> after the teen threw a knife at an officer on Monday morning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 kNAFkD cuqaEv article-text\">Officer Jeffrey Pratt has six years of service with SAPD and has been placed on administrative leave until further notice, SAPD said in an update on Wednesday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 kNAFkD cuqaEv article-text\">The SAPD Shooting Team and the Internal Affairs Unit will conduct separate but concurrent investigations. Their findings will be forwarded to the Bexar County District Attorney\u2019s office for review.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 kNAFkD cuqaEv article-text\">According to SAPD Chief William McManus, two officers were dispatched just before 9:30 a.m. in the 300 block of West Dickson Avenue. They were told the boy had knives and was attempting to hurt himself while he was home alone, McManus said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The officers called a supervisor for further instruction on what to do because the minor was home alone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">While they were on the phone, McManus said the teen went outside with two knives.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">A police report states the teen \u201caggressively approached the officers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The teen threw a knife toward one of the officers when the officer deployed his Taser, the chief said. The prongs failed to attach, and the officer was unable to subdue the teen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 kNAFkD cuqaEv article-text\"><b>&gt;&gt; <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/local\/2025\/09\/08\/sapd-officers-tried-to-back-off-before-shooting-knife-wielding-teen-chief-says\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/local\/2025\/09\/08\/sapd-officers-tried-to-back-off-before-shooting-knife-wielding-teen-chief-says\/\"><b>SAPD officers tried to \u2018back off\u2019 before shooting knife-wielding teen, chief says<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The teen then ran toward the officer with the other knife, and the officer shot at the boy, SAPD said. The 16-year-old was hit in his shoulder and thigh, according to McManus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The teen suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 kNAFkD cuqaEv article-text\">McManus said the officers had done all they could to avoid it. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cThere was a very, very diligent effort made by the officers to de-escalate and back off,\u201d McManus told reporters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">McManus said officers had responded to previous mental health-related calls at the home involving the same boy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">When KSAT 12 News requested additional details on the previous calls, an SAPD public information officer declined to release any other information.
