{"id":216243,"date":"2025-09-10T19:10:30","date_gmt":"2025-09-10T19:10:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/216243\/"},"modified":"2025-09-10T19:10:30","modified_gmt":"2025-09-10T19:10:30","slug":"fdny-adds-39-names-to-9-11-memorial-wall-in-downtown-brooklyn-ahead-of-24th-anniversary-brooklyn-paper","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/216243\/","title":{"rendered":"FDNY adds 39 names to 9\/11 Memorial Wall in Downtown Brooklyn ahead of 24th anniversary \u2022 Brooklyn Paper"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Two days before the nation marks the 24th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks, the FDNY added the names of 39 members who died of World Trade Center-related illnesses to its Memorial Wall during a dedication ceremony at its headquarters in Downtown Brooklyn.<\/p>\n<p>The wall, inscribed with the words, \u201cDedicated to the memory of those who bravely served this department protecting life and property in the City of New York in the rescue and recovery effort at Manhattan Box 5-5-8087 World Trade Center,\u201d now bears the names of 402 FDNY personnel who died from illnesses linked to exposure to toxic dust at Ground Zero during rescue, recovery and cleanup operations in the months after the deadliest terror attack on U.S. soil.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-229742\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/FDNY_911_090925-22.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"560\"  \/>The FDNY Memorial Wall in downtown Brooklyn now bears the names of 402 members who died of 9\/11-related illnesses, following a dedication ceremony on Sept. 9, 2025.Photo by Gabriele Holtermann <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-229744\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/FDNY_911_090925-24.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"560\"  \/>The names of 39 FDNY members were added to the Memorial Wall dedicated to 9\/11 death-related illnesses.Photo by Gabriele Holtermann<\/p>\n<p>Before the reading of the names and the laying of flowers at the wall, FDNY Commissioner Robert Tucker told family members and department personnel gathered outdoors that September remains a \u201ctime of great sadness\u201d for the FDNY, which lost 343 firefighters on 9\/11.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s hard to believe so much time has passed as we remember the 343 members who died that day. It\u2019s difficult to believe that those losses didn\u2019t end there,\u201d Tucker said, noting the thousands of FDNY personnel who have since been diagnosed with 9\/11-related illnesses. \u201cThese losses continue to mount, and our heartbreak continues to grow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>FDNY Chief of Department John Esposito said the ceremony was a reminder that the tragedy did not end on 9\/11 but continued to touch \u201cevery corner\u201d of the FDNY.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[The] impacts of the rescue and recovery effort have continued to claim the lives of the bravest and the best men and women of this department,\u201d Esposito said. \u201cThe members we honor today are among those who ran toward danger that day, and in the days and weeks that followed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-229737\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/FDNY_911_090925-17.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"560\"  \/>Family members on their way to the dedication ceremony.Photo by Gabriele Holtermann <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-229745\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/FDNY_911_090925-25.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"560\"  \/>Families of fallen FDNY members gather with city officials at FDNY headquarters in Brooklyn on Sept. 9, 2025, during a ceremony adding 39 names to the department\u2019s Memorial Wall.Photo by Gabriele Holtermann<\/p>\n<p>Mayor Eric Adams emphasized the importance of teaching younger generations about the terror attacks.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to humanize what happened those 24 years ago and [not] allow time to erode how significant it was. The countless number of men and women ran towards danger, and we\u2019re still losing their lives every day. And when we add these names on this wall to give honor to them, let\u2019s also educate the young people of our society that this is the greatest country on the globe and this city is representative of that,\u201d Adams said.<\/p>\n<p>The number of FDNY members who have died from 9\/11-related illnesses now exceeds the number killed on the day of the attacks.\n<\/p>\n<p>Among those honored was retired <a href=\"https:\/\/www.recordonline.com\/obituaries\/pnys0948579\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FDNY Deputy Chief Nicholas Visconti<\/a>, who led recovery efforts at Ground Zero and died Sept. 20, 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Visconti\u2019s daughter, Nicole Doherty, recalled that on Sept. 11, 2001, her father was driving from upstate to Queens when he learned about the attacks. When he finally reached them in the middle of the night, his first words were: \u201cI\u2019m sorry. I can\u2019t come home until I find all my friends.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The ceremony, Doherty said, helps keep her father\u2019s legacy alive.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt makes us feel not alone without him. It makes us feel [that] he will never be forgotten,\u201d she said. \u201cHe was really worried about that, not just for him, but his friends, and for everyone who was a part of that day, and feeling so supportive and knowing that he had that love back that he gave is really meaningful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lori Cozzino attended the ceremony to honor her late husband, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dignitymemorial.com\/obituaries\/new-york-ny\/anthony-cozzino-11982459\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EMS Lt. Anthony Cozzino,<\/a> who died on Sept. 7, 2024 from cancer<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnthony was diagnosed only two months and 10 days before he passed away, so we didn\u2019t really have much time to process it,\u201d she said. \u201cThe FDNY has been absolutely amazing since Anthony became sick. When they say they\u2019re a family, they\u2019re really a family. They supported us. They were there for us every step of the way. They are still here for us today. They\u2019re constantly checking in on almost a weekly basis.
