{"id":216277,"date":"2025-09-10T19:28:13","date_gmt":"2025-09-10T19:28:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/216277\/"},"modified":"2025-09-10T19:28:13","modified_gmt":"2025-09-10T19:28:13","slug":"keto-diet-reduces-depression-symptoms-by-70-in-new-ohio-state-study","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/216277\/","title":{"rendered":"Keto diet reduces depression symptoms by 70% in new Ohio State study"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/nutrition-and-fitness\/diet-trends\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ketogenic diet<\/a>, commonly known as &#8220;keto,&#8221; has become a popular weight-loss option for some.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">And now, researchers at Ohio State University (OSU) have found that the low-carb, high-fat eating plan may also reduce <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/mental-health\/depression\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">symptoms of depression.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>A new study identified about a 70% decrease in depression symptoms in 16 OSU students who followed at least 10 weeks of a well-formulated keto diet, according to a press release.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/food-drink\/red-meat-can-help-mood-part-healthy-balanced-diet-study-suggests\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>RED MEAT CAN HELP YOUR MOOD IF PART OF A HEALTHY, BALANCED DIET, STUDY SUGGESTS<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Previous research has shown that medications and counseling can reduce <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/mental-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">depressive symptoms<\/a> by about 50% over a similar period.<\/p>\n<p>Although the severity of depression varied, none of the students&#8217; symptoms worsened, and scores fell 37% by the second week.<\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/woman-eating-keto-depression-reduction.jpg\" alt=\"woman eating a keto meal\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\"\/> <\/p>\n<p>Ohio State University researchers discovered that following the keto diet for 10 to 12 weeks can decrease depression symptoms by about two-thirds. (iStock)<\/p>\n<p>The study found that students&#8217; &#8220;global well-being&#8221; increased threefold, with improvements in memory, processing speed, executive function and attention.<\/p>\n<p>All but one participant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/nutrition-and-fitness\/weight-loss\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lost weight,<\/a> averaging 11 pounds and a 2.4% decrease in body fat.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The group included 10 women and six men, with an average age of 24. All were already receiving medication, counseling or both for major depressive disorder before starting keto.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/food-drink\/high-potassium-foods-significantly-lower-risk-heart-failure-study-finds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>HIGH-POTASSIUM FOODS COULD &#8216;SIGNIFICANTLY&#8217; LOWER THE RISK OF HEART FAILURE, STUDY FINDS<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>At the trial&#8217;s start, participants received &#8220;extensive education&#8221; on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/nutrition-and-fitness\/nutrition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">keto diet<\/a>, which consisted of fewer than 50 grams of carbs per day, combined with higher fat and moderate protein.<\/p>\n<p>They were told to eat when hungry and stop when full, without tracking calories.<\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/keto-diet-reduces-depression-salad.jpg\" alt=\"A salad with various toppings.\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\"\/> <\/p>\n<p>The keto diet consists of eating high fat, moderate protein and low carbs. (iStock)<\/p>\n<p>The keto diet converts fat into &#8220;ketones,&#8221; which are acids used by body and brain cells as a glucose alternative, OSU researchers noted. This state of nutritional ketosis provides greater access to ketones as both fuel and signaling molecules.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers concluded that achieving nutritional ketosis may serve as an &#8220;adjunctive therapy for depression&#8221; and warrants a larger <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/medical-research\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">clinical trial<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/food-drink\/your-late-night-cheese-habit-could-sparking-wild-dreams-restless-sleep-experts-warn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>YOUR LATE-NIGHT CHEESE HABIT COULD BE SPARKING WILD DREAMS AND RESTLESS SLEEP, EXPERTS WARN<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In an interview with Fox News Digital, Jeff Volek, Ph.D., lead author of the study and a professor of human sciences at OSU, commented that the &#8220;magnitude of improvements&#8221; was &#8220;definitely a surprise.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s a lot of evidence that ketones improve <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/brain-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">brain function<\/a> and can change people&#8217;s mood through a variety of different neurochemicals,&#8221; he said. &#8220;The ketones could have a direct impact on certain neurotransmitters and so forth that are related to depression.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/woman-cooking-keto-happy.jpg\" alt=\"woman cooking at home\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\"\/> <\/p>\n<p>Following a keto diet promotes the production of ketones, which may have a direct impact on the brain, according to experts.
