{"id":216727,"date":"2025-09-10T23:25:11","date_gmt":"2025-09-10T23:25:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/216727\/"},"modified":"2025-09-10T23:25:11","modified_gmt":"2025-09-10T23:25:11","slug":"whatever-it-takes-world-premiere-hits-legal-hurdle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/216727\/","title":{"rendered":"Whatever It Takes\u2019 World Premiere Hits Legal Hurdle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tA legal roadblock standing in the way of a world premiere for an investigative documentary about the popular <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/degrassi\/\" id=\"auto-tag_degrassi_2\" data-tag=\"degrassi\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Degrassi<\/a> teen series franchise has been removed, allowing the film\u2019s launch weekend at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/toronto-film-festival\/\" id=\"auto-tag_toronto-film-festival_2\" data-tag=\"toronto-film-festival\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Toronto Film Festival<\/a> to go ahead.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tLinda Schuyler, co-creator of the Degrassi property, on Monday filed a notice of action in the Ontario Superior Court alleging the documentary, Degrassi: Whatever It Takes, contained \u201cdefamatory statements and innuendo.\u201d But by Wednesday, Schuyler and the producers of the documentary had settled their creative differences over the documentary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThat will allow twin world premiere screenings this weekend at Scotiabank Theatre in Toronto to go ahead.  <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tSchuyler, in a statement obtained by THR, said of the agreement: \u201cFrom the beginning, it was important to me, and to the whole Degrassi team, to do what we could to set our young performers up for success. The cast was paid much more than $50 a day. We also created and contributed on their behalf to a retirement fund and a scholarship foundation that provided them with opportunities for counseling and supported them into the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tSchuyler, who a decade ago sold her company, Epitome Pictures, to DHX Media, a forerunner of Wild Brain Entertainment, in her legal notice of action objected to claims made in the documentary that underpaid cast members had to pitch in on set alongside crew members to serve meals or wear their own clothes as wardrobe. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIn a separate joint statement, Schuyler, and the film\u2019s producers, Wild Brain Entertainment and Peacock Alley Entertainment, announced an end to their short-lived legal dispute. \u201cThe world premiere and other screenings at TIFF will proceed as planned. For future distribution beyond TIFF, the parties have agreed to add some additional context around the compensation paid to the performers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/drake-0\/\" id=\"auto-tag_drake-0_2\" data-tag=\"drake-0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Drake<\/a> and his former co-stars from the Canadian teen drama\u00a0reunited for the documentary that looks back at the show\u2019s legacy. The legal dispute over the documentary followed Schuyler and Kit Hood as co-creators over four decades, building the Degrassi franchise into an edgy, inclusive teen high school series.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tWild Brain and Peacock Alley Entertainment are behind the documentary that features interviews with stars Drake, Dayo Ade, Stefan Brogren, Amanda Deiseach, Maureen Deiseach, Shenae Grimes-Beech, Jake Epstein, Shane Kippel, Miriam McDonald, Stacie Mistysyn, Melinda Shankar, Amanda Stepto and Jordan Todosey.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe franchise began with\u00a0Kids of Degrassi Street, which aired from 1979-86.\u00a0Degrassi Junior High\u00a0and\u00a0Degrassi High\u00a0followed before\u00a0Degrassi: The Next Generation\u00a0premiered in 2001. The series, which starred Drake, Grimes-Beech, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/nina-dobrev\/\" id=\"auto-tag_nina-dobrev_2\" data-tag=\"nina-dobrev\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nina Dobrev<\/a> and more actors before their big breaks, ultimately ended in 2015. However, the franchise continued with\u00a0Degrassi: Next Class, which\u00a0aired on Netflix from 2016-17.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIronically, Schuyler appears in the trailer for the documentary to reflect on the property: \u201cHave we always gotten it right? Probably not. Have we told our stories with the best of intentions? Yes, we have,\u201d she says, referring to some of the show\u2019s more controversial storylines, including teen pregnancy, drug abuse and mental health.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tTIFF programmer Jason Anderson also touched on the claim of underpaid cast members in his introduction of the documentary on the festival website: \u201cIt all makes for an engrossing history, one that celebrates the realistic take on adolescence that the franchise pioneered (especially when tackling divisive subjects like abortion) while also delving into thornier matters, like some actors\u2019 misgivings about what the show demanded of them and how little they were compensated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tDegrassi: Whatever It Takes\u00a0is executive produced by Josh Scherba, Stephanie Betts and Angela Boudreault for WildBrain and by Carrie Mudd for Peacock Alley.
