T<\/strong>he suspect arrested in connection with Charlie Kirk\u2019s assassination at Utah Valley University Wednesday was released after the FBI announced agents had detained the wrong person for a second time.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Kirk\u2019s killer remains on the run \u2014 with the FBI and local cops hunting for him across the Salt Lake City region.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe subject in custody has been released after an interrogation by law enforcement,\u201d FBI Director Kash Patel\u00a0posted to X Wednesday night<\/a>, just over an hour after he announced \u201cthe subject of the horrific shooting\u201d had been arrested.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The wrongly accused man was nabbed after police initially cuffed \u2013 and then released \u2013 an older man, who had been seen in social media videos being escorted from the Orem campus following the fatal shooting.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Authorities said Wednesday that the second suspect was identified through campus security footage.<\/p>\n

He was also wearing dark clothing, police said.<\/p>\n

Utah Gov. Spencer Cox called Kirk\u2019s killing a \u201cpolitical assassination\u201d \u2013 then indicated the killer could face the death penalty.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just want to remind people that we still have the death penalty in the state of Utah,\u201d Cox said.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

The shooter is believed to have fired a single shot from an elevated position about 200 yards from the tent where Kirk was seated under a pop-up tent.<\/p>\n

The university confirmed the gunman shot from a building across the quad, and police indicated the shots came from the rooftop.<\/p>\n

The mother of the second suspect mistakenly taken into custody described her son as a loyal listener of Kirk \u2013 and had been standing just 25 feet away from the right-wing activist when the fatal shot was fired.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s super shaken,\u201d the frantic mother told The Post, noting she had spoken to her son following the chaos and did not know he had been arrested.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s a great kid\u2026 I have a picture of him. He\u2019s like 25 ft from Charlie on the other side that he was shot. He sent us a video. He was attending like any other college kid.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kirk, 31, was fatally shot in the neck around after 12:20 p.m. local time Wednesday as he was\u00a0speaking on the campus south of Salt Lake City<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Chilling footage circulating on social media could support that \u2013 moments after the fatal shot was fired, a distinct shape could be seen moving across the building roof as crowds cowered in the courtyard below.<\/p>\n

Police would not comment on whether a weapon had been recovered.<\/p>\n

Kirk was rushed to a nearby hospital after the shooting and taken into surgery in critical condition, but later succumbed to his injuries.<\/p>\n

Horrifying footage from the event \u2013 where Kirk was debating with attendees opposed to his conservative opinions \u2013 showed a single gunshot ring out as he recoiled from the hit.<\/p>\n

He had just been asked a question about\u00a0transgender mass shooters<\/a>\u00a0when the bullet was fired.\u00a0<\/p>\n
