{"id":217331,"date":"2025-09-11T04:58:17","date_gmt":"2025-09-11T04:58:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/217331\/"},"modified":"2025-09-11T04:58:17","modified_gmt":"2025-09-11T04:58:17","slug":"dcps-confirms-a-c-outage-in-paxon-high-school-kitchen-action-news-jax","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/217331\/","title":{"rendered":"DCPS confirms A\/C outage in Paxon High School kitchen \u2013 Action News Jax"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">JACKSONVILLE, Fla. \u2014 Paxon High School food services worker, Alesia Lewis, says she and other food services staff have worked without A\/C for months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">Lewis reached out to Action News Jax after she said her attempts to get the A\/C fixed through her managers and school board leaders were met with no action. \u201cIt\u2019s very uncomfortable. It\u2019s hot. We\u2019re wearing black inside the school. And it\u2019s very uncomfortable to be working in that condition,\u201d Lewis explained. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">She says she believes students\u2019 classrooms are without working air conditioning, too. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.actionnewsjax.com\/live-breaking\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.actionnewsjax.com\/live-breaking\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>&gt;&gt;&gt; STREAM ACTION NEWS JAX LIVE <\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">\u201cI heard a couple of classes, their rooms are hot. The air conditioning is out,\u201d Lewis told us. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">Action News Jax obtained inspection reports that show state inspectors had knowledge of the school\u2019s A\/C outage since May. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">That report found overall conditions at Paxon unsatisfactory and called for the A\/C to be repaired when inspectors visited again in June. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">When inspectors returned, they found only the school\u2019s front office to have working A\/C, but no proof that the A\/C had been repaired in the kitchen, and planned to return when school started.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">Duval County Public Schools sent us this statement in response to our questions about the school\u2019s A\/C issues:<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">\u201cWe are aware of the intermittent air conditioning issues in Paxon\u2019s kitchen area, where cafeteria staff prepare meals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">\u201cLike many homes, schools in Duval County can experience AC outages. When this happens, our district maintenance teams respond quickly, and most concerns are resolved the same day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">\u201cThe situation with the staff kitchen at Paxon has been more challenging. Our maintenance team has tried several approaches, including troubleshooting the controller that regulates the system in that part of the building. While we continue working toward a long-term solution, we\u2019ve placed fans in the kitchen to help provide some comfort for employees.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">\u201cUnfortunately, this is a reminder of the reality we\u2019ve shared with our community many times: Duval County has the oldest school buildings in Florida. That\u2019s why we are especially grateful to our voters for approving the half-cent sales tax.
