{"id":217379,"date":"2025-09-11T05:24:19","date_gmt":"2025-09-11T05:24:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/217379\/"},"modified":"2025-09-11T05:24:19","modified_gmt":"2025-09-11T05:24:19","slug":"calgary-man-in-supervised-care-for-brentwood-5-massacre-asks-court-for-more-freedom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/217379\/","title":{"rendered":"Calgary man in supervised care for Brentwood 5 massacre asks court for more freedom"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\tDescrease article font size<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tIncrease article font size<\/p>\n<p>Alberta\u2019s top court has reserved its decision on a request for more freedoms for a mentally ill man who stabbed five people to death at a house party more than a decade ago.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The lawyer for <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/matthew-de-grood\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Matthew de Grood<\/a> argued in court that the man should receive the help as recommended by his treatment team.<\/p>\n<p>Jacqueline Petrie said Alberta\u2019s Criminal Code Review Board last year refused some freedoms and modified others.<\/p>\n<p>She said the board continues to describe her client as a risk to the public and focuses too much about what happened in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was then. It ruled in 2022 that he remain detained at a psychiatric facility, because he was still \u201ca significant risk to public safety.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Petrie challenged that decision, and the Appeal Court rejected her request to set aside the review board order and substitute it with an absolute or conditional discharge.<\/p>\n<p>She argued at the time that the board misinterpreted medical evidence that found de Grood was a significant threat.
