{"id":217583,"date":"2025-09-11T07:16:18","date_gmt":"2025-09-11T07:16:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/217583\/"},"modified":"2025-09-11T07:16:18","modified_gmt":"2025-09-11T07:16:18","slug":"ford-government-declines-to-say-if-temporary-foreign-worker-program-should-end","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/217583\/","title":{"rendered":"Ford government declines to say if temporary foreign worker program should end"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ontario Premier Doug Ford says young people aren\u2019t looking \u201chard enough\u201d for work in the province and suggested unemployed people should consider \u201cfast food\u201d as a potential job choice.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>At the same time, the <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/ford-government\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ford government<\/a> has declined to take a position on whether the federal government should eliminate the temporary foreign worker program, which other Canadian premiers have suggested is one of the root causes of the country\u2019s employment woes.<\/p>\n<p>The premier\u2019s comments come in the wake of rising <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/unemployment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unemployment<\/a> figures, both provincially and nationally, which have worsened since the start of the trade war sparked by U.S. President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n<p>In August, Ontario\u2019s unemployment rate stood at 7.7 per cent while the youth unemployment rate, which includes people between the ages of 15 and 24, hovered at 16.5 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>Ontario\u2019s youth unemployment rate has gradually increased from 10 per cent in March 2023, hitting a peak of 18 per cent in December 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>During a speech to the Toronto Region Board of Trade, Ford bemoaned the low employment figures and suggested a lack of effort was part of the problem.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"170\" height=\"225\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/national.jpg\" alt=\"Get the day's top news, political, economic, and current affairs headlines, delivered to your inbox once a day.\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tGet daily National news<\/p>\n<p>Get the day&#8217;s top news, political, economic, and current affairs headlines, delivered to your inbox once a day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt drives me nuts when I see young, healthy people, they\u2019ll call me up saying, \u2018I can\u2019t find a job\u2019,\u201d Ford said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can assure you, if you look hard enough .. it might be in fast food or something else, (I) think you\u2019ll find a job,\u201d Ford added.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\tMore on Politics<br \/>\n\t\t\tMore videos\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Ford\u2019s comments touched a nerve with NDP Leader Marit Stiles, who said the premier needs to \u201ctake responsibility\u201d for the low employment numbers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve got 700,000 people in the province of Ontario unemployed right now.
