{"id":217745,"date":"2025-09-11T08:45:17","date_gmt":"2025-09-11T08:45:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/217745\/"},"modified":"2025-09-11T08:45:17","modified_gmt":"2025-09-11T08:45:17","slug":"fort-worth-swearing-in-eddie-garcia-as-police-chief-tuesday-pay-lower-than-previous-job","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/217745\/","title":{"rendered":"Fort Worth swearing in Eddie Garc\u00eda as police chief Tuesday, pay lower than previous job\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Fort Worth will swear in Eddie Garc\u00eda as the city\u2019s 28th police chief next Tuesday, ushering in a new era for the department.<\/p>\n<p>Garc\u00eda starts Sept. 22 with a base pay of $306,000 a year, according to the city\u2019s offer letter.<\/p>\n<p>The city will provide him with a city-issued vehicle for official duties and $10,000 to help him relocate to Fort Worth. If Garc\u00eda leaves the job within a year, he must repay the relocation allowance. He must repay half if he leaves the post any time between one and two years.<\/p>\n<p>Garc\u00eda, 54, is taking a pay cut of about $20,000 from his job as an Austin assistant city manager, which he took earlier this year. There, he was offered a set pay of about $327,600, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wfaa.com\/article\/news\/local\/dallas-county\/outgoing-dallas-police-chief-eddie-garcia-net-higher-salary-austin-position-offer-letter\/287-2d757226-d36a-4de4-b2e3-52b5f4749bcc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">WFAA<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Before Austin, Garc\u00eda\u2019s annual salary was $306,440 as Dallas police chief, plus a $10,000 retention bonus every six months. Dallas officials promised Garc\u00eda he would remain the highest-paid police chief in Texas in an effort to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/opinion\/editorials\/2024\/05\/14\/dont-let-dallas-police-chief-eddie-garcia-walk-out-the-door\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">keep him from leaving<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Garc\u00eda will be one of the highest-paid city employees in Fort Worth.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>City Manager Jay Chapa, who started in January, has an annual <a href=\"https:\/\/fortworthreport.org\/2024\/12\/10\/heres-how-much-fort-worth-is-offering-city-manager-candidate-jay-chapa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">salary of $435,000<\/a>. City Attorney Leann Guzman makes $309,580.96 a year, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/fortworthreport.org\/2025\/01\/14\/top-fort-worth-staffers-get-annual-pay-raises-one-time-bonus-for-city-manager\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">raises approved in December<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Garc\u00eda replaces former Police Chief Neil Noakes, who <a href=\"https:\/\/fortworthreport.org\/2024\/12\/09\/fort-worth-police-chief-neil-noakes-announces-impending-retirement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">retired in May<\/a> after just over four years of leading the department of nearly 2,000 officers.<\/p>\n<p>Garc\u00eda was one of <a href=\"https:\/\/fortworthreport.org\/2025\/08\/14\/fort-worth-police-chief-finalists-emphasize-trust-transparency-as-priorities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">four finalists<\/a> for the job. City Manager Chapa chose him over <a href=\"https:\/\/fortworthreport.org\/2025\/05\/16\/fort-worth-to-name-interim-police-chief-as-search-for-permanent-hire-kicks-off\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">interim Chief Robert Alldredge<\/a>, who has been with the department since 1999.<\/p>\n<p>Fort Worth\u2019s police department has long struggled with recruiting, according to the city\u2019s drafted 2026 budget book, in a growing city where many listed <a href=\"https:\/\/fortworthreport.org\/2025\/07\/29\/fort-worth-police-elected-officials-want-new-chief-to-build-community-trust-here-are-their-asks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">trust, transparency and accountability<\/a> as top priorities throughout the search for a new chief.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Black leaders cited years of <a href=\"https:\/\/fortworthreport.org\/2025\/06\/16\/leaders-look-to-fort-worths-next-police-chief-to-improve-race-relations-accountability\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tense relations between police officers and Black communities<\/a>. Hispanic leaders said they\u2019ve seen a mounting fear of law enforcement as federal officials continue <a href=\"https:\/\/fortworthreport.org\/2025\/08\/13\/fort-worth-partnership-with-ice-not-imminent-council-members-say\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">emphasizing deporting undocumented immigrants<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Garc\u00eda, who was born in Puerto Rico and grew up in California, said he wants to<a href=\"https:\/\/fortworthreport.org\/2025\/08\/22\/eddie-garcia-vows-to-strengthen-public-trust-crack-down-on-crime-as-fort-worth-police-chief\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> build close relationships<\/a> with the different communities of Fort Worth. He is open to revisiting what police accountability looks like in the city, he said after he was selected as chief.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou will be treated with dignity and respect by your police department,\u201d Garc\u00eda told the public during an August news conference. \u201cWe will work to earn and maintain your trust every single day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Garc\u00eda is expected to be sworn in at the City Council\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fortworthtexas.gov\/calendar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">next meeting<\/a>, which starts at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 16.<\/p>\n<p>Drew Shaw is a government accountability reporter for the Fort Worth Report.
