{"id":217762,"date":"2025-09-11T08:55:17","date_gmt":"2025-09-11T08:55:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/217762\/"},"modified":"2025-09-11T08:55:17","modified_gmt":"2025-09-11T08:55:17","slug":"william-penn-foundations-support-for-democracy-sets-an-example","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/217762\/","title":{"rendered":"William Penn Foundation\u2019s support for democracy sets an example"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">At a time when so many institutions continue to <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/business\/story\/2025-08-06\/why-are-americas-most-powerful-institutions-capitulating-to-trump\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">bow down<\/a> to President Donald Trump, it was heartening to see the William Penn Foundation make a stand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The Philadelphia-based organization <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/arts\/trump-cuts-william-penn-foundation-grants-20250903.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">announced<\/a> a special round of grants totaling nearly $10 million to groups \u201cworking to defend democratic values, respond to emerging federal actions, and support nonprofit organizations in crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The grants were not awarded through the normal application process. Instead, William Penn identified the recipients. The money came from an increase in the foundation\u2019s overall grant budget.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The moves underscored the \u201cextraordinary uncertainty for our nation and the nonprofit sector,\u201d the foundation said in a statement signed by board chair Katherine H. Christiano and vice chair Peter Haas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The grants will obviously not replace the many devastating cuts announced by the Trump administration, but will help to fill some of the void in Philadelphia until new solutions can be found.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The foundation said it hoped the grants could \u201cbe a bridge,\u201d given the \u201cdiminishing federal resources and the current uncertainty and unjust policies and actions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p type-interstitial text-primary\"><b>\u00bb READ MORE: <a data-link-type=\"interstitial\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/opinion\/editorials\/septa-deal-funding-service-restored-shapiro-20250909.html\" class=\"no-underline text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SEPTA service restoration is a short-term win | Editorial<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The foundation did not name Trump, but it was clear the added funding came in response to the deep <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/billypenn.com\/2025\/05\/15\/trump-federal-cuts-philadelphia-research-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">cuts<\/a> and <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/article\/2024\/jun\/23\/trumps-sledgehammer-message-to-philadelphia-is-light-on-facts-heavy-on-fear\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">chaos<\/a> inflicted by his administration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cFor months, federal executive orders, legislation, and policy changes have threatened the independence of state and local governments, sown confusion about the integrity of future elections, destabilized programmatic and financial planning for many nonprofit organizations, and indiscriminately endangered members of our immigrant, LGBTQ, minority, and low-income communities,\u201d the foundation statement said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">In all, 19 organizations <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/williampennfoundation.org\/news\/william-penn-foundation-grants-10-million-strengthen-nonprofits-support-vulnerable-communities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">received<\/a> funding from William Penn. Many of the groups are on the front lines defending against Trump\u2019s attacks on democracy and civil rights, including the American Civil Liberties Union, the Alliance for Justice, the Democracy Forward Foundation, the Democracy Funders Network, the Environmental Protection Network, and Lawyers for Good Government.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Many institutions have caved to pressure from Trump, including major law firms, media organizations, universities, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p type-interstitial text-primary\"><b>\u00bb READ MORE: <a data-link-type=\"interstitial\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/opinion\/editorials\/robert-kennedy-jr-cdc-vaccine-trump-public-health-20250905.html\" class=\"no-underline text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">RFK Jr.\u2019s pointless dismantling of the nation\u2019s public health system places us all at risk | Editorial<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">A recent survey of more than 500 political scientists <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/04\/22\/nx-s1-5340753\/trump-democracy-authoritarianism-competive-survey-political-scientist\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">found<\/a> the vast majority believe the U.S. is moving from a liberal democracy toward some form of authoritarianism.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Such supine behavior made the William Penn Foundation\u2019s actions look even more heroic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The foundation has long been a pillar in the Philadelphia region. Otto Haas, one of the founders of the Rohm and Haas Co., a specialty chemicals firm, established the philanthropic organization with his wife, Phoebe, in 1945.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The group has long strived to improve the quality of life in the Philadelphia region by expanding access to resources and opportunities that promote a more vital and just city and region for all.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The foundation, with assets of roughly $3.1 billion, gives away about $154 million each year. Its grants support five areas: arts and culture, children and families, democracy and civic initiatives, environment and public space, and workforce training and services.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Those are many of the same areas Trump is targeting for no rhyme or reason, let alone any plan for improvement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Credit the William Penn Foundation for sticking to its mission and doing the right thing.
