Michael Nagle<\/p>\n<p>Progressives have said the new law could\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/council.nyc.gov\/press\/2025\/07\/14\/2923\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">increase wages to more than $21 per hour<\/a>\u00a0for delivery drivers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you order groceries on an app, they don\u2019t magically appear at your door,\u201d\u00a0Nurse said. \u201cBehind every delivery is a worker trying to earn a living and put food on the table. Helayne Seidman<\/p>\n<p>Council members also overrode Adams veto of a bill\u00a0sponsored by\u00a0Council Member Jennifer Guti\u00e9rrez, that would give food delivery worker protections for things like access to bathrooms, fire safety equipment and insulated delivery bags.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor a mayor who loves to brand himself as a champion of working-class New Yorkers, these vetoes weren\u2019t just disappointing \u2014 they were a slap in the face,\u201d\u00a0Guti\u00e9rrez said.<\/p>\n<p>Her bill also requires DCWP to study working conditions for delivery workers so the agency can determine the new minimum pay rate for the drivers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese bills were designed to protect the very delivery workers his own administration once claimed they wanted to help.
