Turning Point USA, the organization he founded, later confirmed Kirk&#8217;s death.<\/li>\n<li class=\"what-to-know__item\">Around 90 minutes after he announced that &#8220;The subject for the horrific shooting today that took the life of Charlie Kirk is now in custody,&#8221; FBI director Kash Patel said that person had been released.<\/li>\n<li class=\"what-to-know__item\">Utah Gov. Spencer Cox described Kirk\u2019s killing as \u201ca political assassination\u201d in remarks during a news conference.<\/li>\n<li class=\"what-to-know__item\">Kirk personified the pugnacious, populist conservatism that has taken over the Republican Party in the age of Trump. <\/li>\n<li class=\"what-to-know__item\">Two people who were taken into custody earlier in the day were found to have no ties to the shooting,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/FBISaltLakeCity\/status\/1965961274757468603\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the FBI\u00a0<\/a>and the Utah Public Safety Department\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mailchi.mp\/utah\/for-immediate-release-updates-on-charlie-kirk-shooting-at-uvu?e=98970b8875\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said in a joint statement<\/a>, which called the shooting a targeted attack.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This live blog has ended.
