{"id":219088,"date":"2025-09-11T20:47:17","date_gmt":"2025-09-11T20:47:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/219088\/"},"modified":"2025-09-11T20:47:17","modified_gmt":"2025-09-11T20:47:17","slug":"texts-reveal-dialogue-between-mayor-johnson-controversial-frontrunner-in-nycs-mayoral-race","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/219088\/","title":{"rendered":"Texts reveal dialogue between Mayor Johnson, controversial frontrunner in NYC&#8217;s mayoral race"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> Mayor Brandon Johnson has been in touch with the frontrunner in New York City\u2019s mayoral race \u2014 democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani, who\u2019s proving polarizing and at the same time wildly popular \u2014 but Johnson\u2019s campaign said it was just to congratulate him on his primary victory this summer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMayor Johnson was happy to call Mr. Mamdani and congratulate him on winning the Democratic primary&#8230; and wishing him the best of luck,\u201d says Christian Perry, a Johnson campaign spokesman.<\/p>\n<p>Asked whether Johnson might endorse Mamdani, Perry said: \u201cWe haven\u2019t had a conversation about that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In an open records request, the Chicago Sun-Times asked Johnson\u2019s office for a copy of any texts and emails this year between the men, whose progressive politics seem to intersect at some levels.<\/p>\n<p>A copy of a single message was produced this week by Chicago\u2019s City Hall in which Mamdani, a New York state assembly member, texted Johnson on July 11 around 1 p.m., saying, \u201cHi Mayor Johnson, this is Zohran Mamdani. I just called, looking forward to chatting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They ended up speaking sometime later.<\/p>\n<p>                            <a class=\"AnchorLink\" id=\"image-730000\" name=\"image-730000\" data-cms-ai=\"0\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"Image\" alt=\"A copy of the text message between Mayor Brandon Johnson and Zohran Mamdani.\"  width=\"840\" height=\"379\" src=\"https:\/\/cst.brightspotcdn.com\/dims4\/default\/52a7f0e\/2147483647\/strip\/true\/crop\/1954x882+0+0\/resize\/840x379!\/quality\/90\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fchorus-production-cst-web.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com%2Fbrightspot%2F3b%2Fd7%2Fccb7bafb42359dfc3a533d7e185e%2Fscreenshot-2025-09-10-at-3-37-28-pm.png\" data-lazy-load=\"true\" bad-src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciIHZlcnNpb249IjEuMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIzNzlweCIgd2lkdGg9Ijg0MHB4Ij48L3N2Zz4=\"\/><\/p>\n<p>A copy of the text message between Mayor Brandon Johnson and Zohran Mamdani.<\/p>\n<p>Mamdani\u2019s campaign wouldn\u2019t elaborate \u2014 though a source asserted that \u201cZohran did not seek Mayor Johnson\u2019s endorsement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A Mamdani campaign aide, Dora Pekec, said via email, \u201cZohran has participated in a breadth of conversations with numerous city, state, and federal leaders from major cities across the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not clear whether Mamdani \u2014 whose primary was June 24, with his victory becoming official July 1 \u2014 would want Johnson\u2019s political backing given Johnson\u2019s abysmal popularity in polling.<\/p>\n<p> A spokesman for Andrew Cuomo, who lost to Mamdani in the primary and is now running outside the Democratic Party in the November general election, said he hopes Johnson backs Mamdani.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh lordie I hope that\u2019s the case,\u201d said Rich Azzopardi, adding \u201cI can comfortably say\u201d there\u2019s been \u201cno contact\u201d between his candidate and Johnson.<\/p>\n<p>Azzopardi noted that Cuomo\u2019s new campaign manager is Greg Goldner, a longtime political operative in Chicago for, among others, former Mayors Richard M. Daley and Rahm Emanuel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe hired a Rahm Emanuel-Daley guy because he saw what happened to your lovely city under a special brand of entitled and incompetent socialism and he was willing to relocate half way across the country to make sure it doesn\u2019t happen in New York City,\u201d Azzopardi said.<\/p>\n<p>NBC News recently reported that \u201cMamdani\u2019s camp is tracking Johnson\u2019s challenges and trying to avoid repeating Second City missteps,\u201d citing a source. Johnson has been criticized for, among other things, not adequately dealing with the city\u2019s financial mess, appearing to carry water for his philosophical and campaign bedfellow, the Chicago Teachers Union, and floating unpopular tax increases.<\/p>\n<p>Also running for New York mayor is the incumbent, Eric Adams.<\/p>\n<p>A previous open records request to Johnson\u2019s office earlier this year revealed Johnson and Adams were in touch in February, though a Johnson aide said at the time it was over upcoming congressional testimony by big city mayors on immigration policies.<\/p>\n<p>On Feb. 4, Adams texted Johnson at 7:40 p.m. saying, \u201cBrother Mayor u go ice [sic] me a call when you are free. Mayor Adams.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Johnson texted back, \u201c<b> <\/b>Yo! What\u2019s good sir?! Give me 30? [REDACTED] Happy new year!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Adams texted back: \u201cThank you [REDACTED]. I am walking in a meeting. Will be done in an hour and half. You can catch me after or tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Johnson replied: \u201cI\u2019ll be up till 10:30 CDT . . . if you [sic] any energy left otherwise first thing in the morning works.
