The three-year deal includes 3% pay bumps every year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">PFT members <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/education\/philadelphia-federation-of-teachers-contract-ratification-approval-20250828.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/education\/philadelphia-federation-of-teachers-contract-ratification-approval-20250828.html\">ratified the contract a week ago<\/a> by a 69% to 31% margin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The board\u2019s unanimous action came at a special school board meeting where officials voted to borrow $1.5 billion just to keep the district running \u2014 a move that comes with $30 million in borrowing costs \u2014 while the district awaits state funds amid a Harrisburg budget stalemate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The last step in the contract\u2019s adoption came after a summer of saber rattling, averting a threatened labor strike.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Members of the district\u2019s largest union had voted to authorize a work stoppage, but ended up <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/education\/philadelphia-school-district-tentative-agreement-20250824.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/education\/philadelphia-school-district-tentative-agreement-20250824.html\">settling on a deal<\/a> a week before the Aug. 31 contract deadline \u2014 <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/education\/philadelphia-school-district-first-day-pft-contract-2025-20250825.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/education\/philadelphia-school-district-first-day-pft-contract-2025-20250825.html\">ensuring no disruption to school<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Superintendent Tony B. Watlington Sr. said the contract was good news, and praised the PFT leadership, including president Arthur Steinberg, chief of staff LeShawna Coleman, who served as chief negotiator, and Wendy Coleman, a union vice president.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cYou are always fierce advocates for all of your members and are deeply committed to improving the lives of students, families, and employees, and we\u2019re grateful for all of your passion and dedication in this area,\u201d Watlington said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Board member ChauWing Lam expressed gratitude to the district\u2019s teachers and other workers covered by the contract.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cYou are working so hard, and making sure that every single student gets what they need,\u201d Lam said. \u201cReally, the work of the district is impossible without you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Reginald Streater, the school board president, said the agreement \u201creflects our shared commitment to Philadelphia\u2019s students and the dedicated educators who serve them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s in in the contract<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The contract, which expires in August 2027, <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/education\/pft-contract-philadelphia-school-district-terms-20250826.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/education\/pft-contract-philadelphia-school-district-terms-20250826.html\">gives PFT members parental leave<\/a> for the first time in union history. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">It also amends the <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/education\/philadelphia-school-district-teacher-contract-sick-days-warnings-20240228.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/education\/philadelphia-school-district-teacher-contract-sick-days-warnings-20240228.html\">controversial former \u201c3-5-7-9\u2033 policy<\/a>, which penalized members for taking their earned sick time, and makes it easier for teachers to reach \u201csenior career\u201d status, or the top of the pay scale.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The pact also provides bonuses for teachers who agree to work in hard-to-staff schools.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p type-interstitial text-primary\"><b>\u00bb READ MORE: <a data-link-type=\"interstitial\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/education\/pft-contract-philadelphia-school-district-terms-20250826.html\" class=\"no-underline text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">PFT\u2019s new contract includes 3% raises, parental leave, and an easier path up the pay scale<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">With the contract adoption, beginning district teachers are now paid $55,771; those at the top of the pay scale make $110,720. Paraprofessionals, the lowest-paid PFT members, start at $27,477, and max out, after six years, at $37,962.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">PFT members will see their raises in their next paychecks, with retroactive pay \u2014 the contract technically was effective Sept. 1 \u2014 expected by November. Bonuses will be paid in the last October paycheck.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Officials have not yet said how much the contract will cost the district annually, or how the district will pay for it. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The district is still negotiating deals with the district\u2019s school safety officers\u2019 union, and the union that represents principals and other administrators.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The Philadelphia Federation of Teachers\u2019 contract is final: The city\u2019s school board formally adopted it Thursday.
