Local leaders and volunteers describe the vigil as a way to remember Kirk\u2019s life and legacy while uniting the community.<\/p>\n

NEPTUNE BEACH, Fla. \u2014 People across the country are gathering to honor the life of conservative activist Charlie Kirk<\/a>, who was fatally shot earlier while speaking at Utah Valley University.<\/p>\n

In Northeast Florida, the Republican Party of Duval County is holding a vigil at Neptune Beach, and police have been present in the area since the afternoon to ensure security.<\/p>\n

Mayor Cori Bylund said local leaders and volunteers quickly came together to organize the vigil, describing it as a way to remember Kirk\u2019s life and legacy while uniting the community in a difficult time.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe first right in the Bill of Rights is freedom of speech, to assemble and religion,\u201d Bylund said. \u201cThe fact we live in a place right now where someone was assassinated because someone didn\u2019t agree with him is a very sad state of affairs.\u201d<\/p>\n

Organizers say the vigil is meant not only to honor Kirk but also to serve as a reminder of the importance of coming together despite political differences.<\/p>\n
