{"id":219460,"date":"2025-09-12T00:06:21","date_gmt":"2025-09-12T00:06:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/219460\/"},"modified":"2025-09-12T00:06:21","modified_gmt":"2025-09-12T00:06:21","slug":"trump-asks-court-to-let-him-fire-lisa-cook-before-next-fed-meeting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/219460\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump asks court to let him fire Lisa Cook before next Fed meeting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>U.S. President Donald Trump and Lisa Cook, governor of the U.S. Federal Reserve<\/p>\n<p>Annabelle Gordon | Reuters | Al Drago | Bloomberg | Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Lawyers for President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/donald-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Donald Trump<\/a> on Thursday asked a federal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/09\/09\/fed-lisa-cook-trump-powell-judge-jia-cobb-pulte.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">appeals court<\/a> to let his bid to fire <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/federal-reserve\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Federal Reserve<\/a> Board Governor Lisa Cook take effect before the central bank&#8217;s rate-setting committee meets next week.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/storage.courtlistener.com\/recap\/gov.uscourts.cadc.42372\/gov.uscourts.cadc.42372.01208774677.0_1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">request<\/a> to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit came two days after a lower-court judge <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/09\/09\/fed-lisa-cook-trump-powell-judge-jia-cobb-pulte.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">blocked Trump<\/a> from removing Cook from her post while her lawsuit proceeds.<\/p>\n<p>The Federal Open Market Committee, which includes Cook, is set to convene Tuesday for a two-day <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/09\/10\/stock-market-today-live-updates.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">policy meeting<\/a> where members will decide whether to cut a benchmark interest rate.<\/p>\n<p>Trump&#8217;s lawyers from the Department of Justice want the appeals court to issue a ruling by Monday afternoon because the FOMC &#8220;is scheduled to meet and may direct open market activities for Federal Reserve Banks&#8221; by Tuesday, their court filing says.<\/p>\n<p>Trump wants the Fed to slash rates in order to spur economic growth and reduce the cost of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/trump-says-us-interest-rate-is-least-3-points-too-high-2025-07-09\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">paying the nation&#8217;s debts<\/a>. He has frequently attacked Fed Chairman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/jay-powell\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jerome Powell<\/a> for refusing to lower rates in 2025 so far, and at points considered trying to fire him.<\/p>\n<p>Trump has backed off the threats against Powell, but he has followed through on moving to fire Cook, an appointee of former President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/joe-biden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Joe Biden<\/a> who has voted in lockstep with Powell.<\/p>\n<p>Trump cited allegations of mortgage fraud put forward by his administration&#8217;s housing finance director, Bill Pulte, as the reason for ordering Cook&#8217;s removal. He has since predicted that he will soon have a &#8220;majority&#8221; on the Fed board that will vote to lower interest rates.
