Shoplifting is something many businesses, including those in downtown Vernon<\/a>, B.C., have to contend with, but a recent incident at a toy and school supply store has the owners in disbelief.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were just shocked,\u201d said Trevor Henke, owner of the Vernon Teach and Learn store.<\/p>\n

The shock involves the alleged shoplifters-two middle-aged women, possibly older.<\/p>\n

Surveillance cameras captured candy and model toy cars being stolen.<\/p>\n

Henke said staff had a suspicious\u00a0 feeling something didn\u2019t feel right, but it wasn\u2019t until after the pair left that they reviewed the security footage.<\/p>\n

In it, one of the women is seen buying ice cream and as the clerk gives her change, the suspect is seen grabbing chocolate bars and putting them in a large purse.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t expect that, you know,\u201d Henke said. \u201cUsually older folks are pretty honest.\u201d<\/p>\n

A short while later, Henke said the pair moved to another area of the store, where according to Henke,\u00a0 several miniature collectible cars were taken.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey took the cars off of here and then the one walked over here and just slipped them in her bag on this side,\u201d Henke explained.<\/p>\n

The video caught the moment the items were being placed in the suspect\u2019s purse.<\/p>\n

Henke figures he\u2019s out at least $75.<\/p>\n

\u201cEverybody\u2019s struggling these times and you know, I know lots of people are struggling. Well, small business like us are struggling too,\u201d he told Global News. \u201cThat hits your profit.\u201d<\/p>\n
