The Old 97\u2019s<\/a>, a Dallas band that cut its teeth in the early \u201990s Deep Ellum bar scene, later taking its Texas country-meets-rock \u2019n\u2019 roll sound nationwide, were lifetime honorees at the Americana Music Association\u2019s Nashville award ceremony on Wednesday. <\/p>\n

\u201cI started this job at 16 years old. Back then the Dallas press called me a pretty boy teen folkie, and now, I guess I\u2019m like an elder statesman teen folkie or something,\u201d said frontman Rhett Miller<\/a>, according to Variety. <\/p>\n

He offered some advice to the crowd: \u201cNever get naked on a dressing room couch. If you\u2019re thinking about getting sober, it\u2019s pretty awesome. If you\u2019re gonna sign to a major label, do it in the 1990s. And finally, if you\u2019re gonna be in a band, be in a band with your best friends.\u201d <\/p>\n

The Old 97\u2019s\u2019 name was inspired<\/a> by a Johnny Cash ballad about a deadly 1903 train wreck. <\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018The name is not going to be a problem. We\u2019re all so young, we\u2019ll never be old,\u2019\u201d Miller recalled assuring their label in the mid \u201990s in a Dallas Morning News<\/a> interview last year. The company preferred the band be called the New 97\u2019s or just the 97\u2019s, he said. <\/p>\n

With over 30 years together and 13 studio albums behind them, \u201cwe\u2019re all creeping quickly towards old,\u201d Miller said. <\/p>\n
