Casting is now complete for\u00a0Classic Stage Company<\/a>‘s upcoming revival of The Baker’s Wife<\/a>, which
\n will open the Off-Broadway company’s 2025-2026 season. Performances are
\n scheduled for October 23-December 14 with an official opening November
\n11 at CSC\u2019s Lynn F. Angelson Theater.<\/p>\n

As previously reported,<\/a>\u00a0West Side Story
\n Oscar winner, Broadway favorite, and frequent Tony Awards host Ariana
\nDeBose will star as Genevieve, the musical’s title role, opposite stage and screen star Scott Bakula<\/a> (Quantum Leap)\u00a0as Baker Aimable Castagnet.<\/p>\n

Completing the company will be the newly announced\u00a0Savannah Lee Birdsong (Little Shop of Horrors), Arnie Burton<\/a> (Machinal), Tony nominee Robert Cuccioli<\/a> (Jekyll & Hyde), Alma Cuervo<\/a> (On Your Feet!), Tony nominee Kevin Del Aguila<\/a> (Some Like It Hot), Bill English<\/a> (Days of Wine and Roses), Zachary Freier-Harrison, Samantha Marisol Gershman (Water for Elephants), Nathan Lee Graham<\/a> (Mid-Century Modern), Tony nominee Judy Kuhn<\/a> (Fun Home), Kelly Lester (Cabaret at The Old Globe), Sally Murphy<\/a> (The Minutes), Manu Narayan<\/a> (Company), Mason Olshavsky, Kevin William Paul<\/a> (The Outsiders), Will Roland (Dear Evan Hansen), and Hailey Thomas (Little Shop of Horrors).<\/p>\n

The upcoming production will mark the first full-scale NYC production of the 1976 Stephen Schwartz<\/a>-Joseph Stein musical The Baker\u2019s Wife,
\n which famously closed before it officially opened on Broadway. Gordon
\nGreenberg will direct the production, presented by special arrangement
\nwith the Menier Chocolate Factory, Creative Partners Productions<\/a>, and Aaron Glick<\/a>.
\nGreenberg also helmed a 2024 London revival at the Menier. The transfer
\ncontinues a long relationship between the similarly situated companies,
\nwhere John Doyle<\/a> has frequently directed, also serving as artistic
\ndirector of CSC.<\/p>\n

“Ariana
\n is one of our finest young singing actresses, and I’m excited by the
\ndepth and nuance she will bring to the title role,\u201d said composer
\nSchwartz in an earlier statement. \u201cPlus, I’ve had the pleasure of hearing her
\nsing ‘Meadowlark,’ so I know CSC audiences are in for a treat.\u201d<\/p>\n

Director Greenberg added, “Ariana DeBose<\/a> brings an electric mix of vulnerability, wit, and
\nstar power to Genevieve\u2014qualities that not only honor Stephen and
\nJoe\u2019s beautiful work but also ignite it in thrilling new ways. She\u2019s the
\n kind of performer who makes you lean forward in your seat\u2014not just
\nbecause of her voice, which is extraordinary, but because of the
\nemotional truth she brings to every moment. Watching her inhabit this
\nrole will be like discovering the character for the first time.”<\/p>\n

Based on the film La Femme du Boulanger by Marcel Pagnol<\/a> and
\n Jean Gionoand, the musical follows the arrival of a new Baker and his
\nyounger wife, who turn a provincial French village upside down. The Baker’s Wife achieved
\n cult status thanks to a cast recording that features Patti
\n LuPone and Paul Sorvino<\/a>, and a score that includes “Meadowlark,” “Gifts
\n of Love,” “Chanson,” and “Proud Lady.”<\/p>\n

The upcoming production will also have\u00a0choreography by\u00a0Stephanie Klemons<\/a>, music\u00a0direction by\u00a0Charlie Alterman, set\u00a0design by\u00a0Jason Sherwood<\/a>, costume\u00a0design by\u00a0Catherine Zuber<\/a>, lighting design by\u00a0Bradley King<\/a>, and\u00a0sound design by\u00a0Jason Crystal<\/a>.\u00a0Casting is\u00a0by The Telsey Office<\/a>‘s\u00a0Craig Burns<\/a> with production management\u00a0by Libby JVera\/LJPM. Jason Weixelman serves as production stage manager.<\/p>\n

For her performance as Anita in Steven Spielberg<\/a>\u2019s West Side Story, DeBose earned Academy Award, BAFTA, Critics
\n Choice, and SAG Awards. In doing so, she became the first openly queer
\nAfro-Latina to receive an Academy Award. In
\n 2022, 2023, and 2024, she hosted the Tony Awards, which earned Emmy nominations for Outstanding Variety
\nSpecial in 2023 and 2024. She also starred in both seasons of the
\ncritically acclaimed musical comedy series Schmigadoon! as well as Ryan Murphy<\/a>‘s The Prom. On Broadway, DeBose was Tony-nominated for her role as Disco Donna in Summer: The Donna Summer Musical; she was also part of the original cast of Hamilton, also appearing in the film adaptation for Disney+. Other stage credits include Pippin, Motown the Musical, Bring It On: The Musical, and Company.<\/p>\n

Bakula, who played Dominique in a 1980 production of The Baker\u2019s Wife at the Cincinnati Playhouse, made his Broadway debut in 1983, starring as Joe DiMaggio in Marilyn: An American Fable. In 1988, Bakula was Tony-nominated for his work in the musical Romance\/Romance. He last appeared on the New York stage, Off-Broadway, in The Connector. The actor may be best known for his five-year stint in Quantum Leap, earning a Golden Globe Award and four Emmy nominations. His numerous screen credits also include NCIS:
\n New Orleans, Behind the Candelabra, Men of a Certain Age, Looking, Star
\n Trek: Enterprise, Only Murders in the Building, Divinity, The
\nInformant, American Beauty, Life As a House, Color of Night, Necessary
\nRoughness, Sibling Rivalry, and more.<\/p>\n
