{"id":222489,"date":"2025-09-13T03:03:14","date_gmt":"2025-09-13T03:03:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/222489\/"},"modified":"2025-09-13T03:03:14","modified_gmt":"2025-09-13T03:03:14","slug":"legislative-timeline-for-new-sixers-arena-uncertain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/222489\/","title":{"rendered":"Legislative timeline for new Sixers arena uncertain"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The franchise has provided scant information about the new facility since announcing its plans in January \u2014 less than a month after Council had authorized a separate proposal to build a new basketball arena in Center City near Chinatown.\n<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/whyy.org\/articles\/philadelphia-sixers-arena-center-city-south-philly\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">stunning decision<\/a> to abandon that plan followed a string of daylong hearings, hours of closed-door negotiations and scores of protests, rallies and press conferences organized by arena opponents. Critics argued a Center City arena would clog surrounding streets with traffic, creating an <a href=\"https:\/\/whyy.org\/articles\/chinatown-development-corporation-sixers-arena-opposition\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cexistential threat\u201d<\/a> to small businesses in Chinatown, as well as the neighborhood itself.\n<\/p>\n<p>The proposal for the sports complex is expected to draw less controversy given the area\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/whyy.org\/articles\/sixers-arena-squilla-special-services-district\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">longstanding identity<\/a> as a destination for fans of the city\u2019s four major sports teams. But the complex is poised for dramatic change in the coming years.\n<\/p>\n<p>The new arena is considered a complement to an <a href=\"https:\/\/whyy.org\/articles\/south-philly-sports-complex-comcast-spectacor-master-plan\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ambitious redevelopment plan<\/a> Comcast announced last February. With help from other investors, the company hopes to spend the next decade transforming the sports complex into a year-round destination for work and play.\n  <\/p>\n<p>The $2.5 billion plan calls for new retail and restaurants, a music venue and a hotel to start. If the full plan is realized, it will also bring office buildings and new residential housing to the area.\n<\/p>\n<p>For now, it\u2019s unclear how the new facility might fit into this master plan, which leaves room for a new facility to replace the Xfinity Mobile Arena but provides no additional details.
