Silencing individual creative artists based on their nationality does not promote better understanding or advance the cause of peace.”

Paramount is the first studio to state a position on the divisive issue. An insider who was not authorized to speak about the internal debate said Paramount Chief Executive David Ellison and the company’s leadership team felt strongly about the need to speak out in opposition, believing that individuals should not be boycotted based on their nationality.

“The global entertainment industry should be encouraging artists to tell their stories and share their ideas with audiences throughout the world,” Paramount said. “We need more engagement and communication — not less.”

In response, the group took issue with how Paramount characterized its position.

The group said in an emailed statement to The Times that its pledge “does not target individuals based on identity,” and instead goes after “complicit Israeli film institutions and companies.”

“We sincerely hope Paramount isn’t intentionally misrepresenting the pledge in an attempt to silence our colleagues in the film industry,” the group said. “Such a move would only shield a genocidal regime from criticism at a time when global outrage is exponentially growing and while meaningful steps towards accountability are being taken by many.”

Paramount on Friday sharply denounced a proposed boycott of Israeli film institutions by a group that calls itself…

[9
120976,99801,18926,171,81102,67440,454,5169,14107,19918,120974,38763,120978,15329,120975,67,132,120977,68
0":"post-223022","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-entertainment","8":"tag-apartheid","9":"tag-boycott","10":"tag-cinema","11":"tag-entertainment","12":"tag-filmmaker","13":"tag-gaza-conflict","14":"tag-government","15":"tag-group","16":"tag-hollywood","17":"tag-idea","18":"tag-israeli-film-industry","19":"tag-open-letter","20":"tag-palestinian-people","21":"tag-paramount","22":"tag-production-company","23":"tag-united-states","24":"tag-unitedstates","25":"tag-urgent-moment","26":"tag-us
["GET
