{"id":223057,"date":"2025-09-13T08:09:24","date_gmt":"2025-09-13T08:09:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/223057\/"},"modified":"2025-09-13T08:09:24","modified_gmt":"2025-09-13T08:09:24","slug":"phoenix-college-prep-students-swim-for-a-good-cause","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/223057\/","title":{"rendered":"Phoenix college prep students swim for a good cause"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/3CDB597B2EFA03F0E04BFEE9EA6A5144.jpg\" alt=\"AZ college prep swim team get ready for fundraiser\" class=\"sr-only\" data-v-7a5d4fdb=\"\"\/>    <\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\"><strong>PHOENIX<\/strong> &#8211; Students at Xavier College Prep were out swimming for a good cause in Phoenix on Friday as part of the 6th annual &#8220;Swim for the Light&#8221; fundraiser.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">&#8220;We&#8217;re raising money for athletes&#8217; mental health and to show that it&#8217;s okay to not be okay and that there&#8217;s always someone to reach out to,&#8221; said Sophie Dumanski, a Xavier Swim for the Light leader.<\/p>\n<p original-article-post=\"\" origination_station=\"KSAZ\" data-v-ec26887a=\"\" data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">What we know:<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">The student-led fundraiser benefits Valleywise Health&#8217;s behavioral health programs, including the First Episode Center, which provides care to young people experiencing early psychosis.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">With 35 swimmers on the team this year, the Xavier Swim for the Light leaders say it&#8217;s important to check on one another when it comes to mental health.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">&#8220;Swim can be mentally challenging sometimes, but I think it&#8217;s really important to talk about mental health because everyone on the team feels a little bit better about themselves, more open to talk about it because everyone struggles with it at some point,&#8221; said Audrey McEwen, another Xavier Swim for the Light leader.<\/p>\n<p original-article-post=\"\" origination_station=\"KSAZ\" data-v-ec26887a=\"\" data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">By the numbers:<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">Last year, $11,600 was raised, and this year the community&#8217;s goal is $12,000. Swimmers will set up fundraising links for people to donate and support, then swim their 100-yard relay.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">&#8220;One hundred percent of the proceeds are going to the Valleywise Foundation, 100% to the patients themselves, really just to help with their everyday lives \u2014 just even basic things like clothing, but also other things like journals for teens are so important,&#8221; said Dr. Wendy Watson, a psychiatrist at Valleywise Health.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">Anyone can get involved.
