{"id":223139,"date":"2025-09-13T08:52:10","date_gmt":"2025-09-13T08:52:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/223139\/"},"modified":"2025-09-13T08:52:10","modified_gmt":"2025-09-13T08:52:10","slug":"stage-2-water-shortage-in-effect-for-west-maui-maui-now","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/223139\/","title":{"rendered":"Stage 2 water shortage in effect for West Maui : Maui Now"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Pursuant to Chapter 14.06A, Maui County Code, the Department of Water Supply of the County of Maui hereby provides notice of a Stage 2 water shortage for water consumers in the West Maui service area. <\/p>\n<p>The West Maui service area includes Lahaina, K\u0101\u02bbanapali, Kahana, M\u0101hinahina, N\u0101pili-Honok\u014dwai, and Honok\u014dhau. West Maui is experiencing continued dry weather and lack of rainfall. Therefore, the existing water shortage is being upgraded to a Stage 2 for West Maui until water source levels are adequate to meet demand.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Director of Water Supply, with the approval of the Mayor, is authorized to declare a water shortage whenever the water supply becomes inadequate in any area in the County due to a period of drought, an infrastructure or mechanical malfunction, natural disaster, or other event causing a water shortage. \u00a0A Stage 2 water shortage exists if the Director determines that anticipated water demand in an area is projected to exceed available water supply by 16-30%. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Currently, Honok\u014dhau Stream flow is low, the inflow to M\u0101hinahina Water Treatment Facility is zero, and the US drought monitor forecast of D-2 severe drought conditions all support the decision to upgrade to a Stage 2 Water Shortage for West Maui. \u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<p><b>ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW AD<\/b><\/p>\n<p>When a water shortage is declared, the Director may apply schedules, restrictions, or measures as follows: \u00a0<\/p>\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Prohibit water usage during certain hours or days of the week; <\/li>\n<li>Prohibit the use of water for irrigation, lawns, personal washing of vehicles, or other nonessential activities; <\/li>\n<li>Prohibit the use of temporary construction meters; and <\/li>\n<li>Institute water shortage rates as set forth in the annual budget. <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>\u00a0Failure of a water customer to comply with any mandated water restriction may result in penalties, including a fine of $500 for each violation and removal of the water meter for subsequent violations. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>At this time, for all West Maui water consumers the following water use restrictions apply:<\/p>\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>All nonessential water use for commercial and industrial use should cease.<\/li>\n<li>Irrigation is allowed for no more than one day per week according to the following schedule:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Wednesday for even residential addresses.<\/li>\n<li>Thursday for odd residential addresses.<\/li>\n<li>Friday for even commercial facilities and multifamily units.<\/li>\n<li>Saturday for even commercial facilities and multifamily units.<\/li>\n<li>Plant containers, trees, shrubs, and vegetable gardens may be watered one additional day using only drip irrigation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Customers must repair leaks, breaks or faulty sprinklers within three days of notice or notification to the extent feasible.<\/li>\n<li>The use of potable water at temporary construction meters is prohibited.<\/li>\n<li>Personal washing of vehicles is prohibited.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Parks, school grounds and recreation fields adhere to the one day a week irrigation schedule.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><b>ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW AD<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The Stage 1 water shortage notification was effective as of June 30, 2022, The Stage 2 water shortage is effective Sept. 4, 2025 and will remain until further notice.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><b>ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW AD<\/b><b>ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW AD<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Agricultural water customers are required to reduce water consumption by 20%. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Department will continue to watch supply and demand, and the weather forecast to determine when the Stage 2 water shortage can end or if a Stage 3 water shortage must be declared.<\/p>\n<p><b>ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW AD<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Please contact the Department Secretary at 808-270-7816 if further information is needed.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Pursuant to Chapter 14.06A, Maui County Code, the Department of Water Supply of the County of Maui hereby&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":223140,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[23],"tags":[6772,746,121042,121043,121044,121045,121046,121047,103394,121048,121049,159,121050,67,132,68,56408,121051],"class_list":{"0":"post-223139","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-environment","8":"tag-drought","9":"tag-environment","10":"tag-honokohau","11":"tag-honokowai","12":"tag-kahana","13":"tag-kaanapali","14":"tag-lahaina","15":"tag-mahinahina","16":"tag-maui-drought","17":"tag-napili","18":"tag-napili-honokowai","19":"tag-science","20":"tag-stage-2-water-shortage","21":"tag-united-states","22":"tag-unitedstates","23":"tag-us","24":"tag-water-shortage","25":"tag-west-maui-water-shortage"},"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/pubeurope.com\/@us\/115196142787442512","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/223139","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/3"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=223139"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/223139\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/223140"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=223139"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=223139"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=223139"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
