{"id":223804,"date":"2025-09-13T14:48:13","date_gmt":"2025-09-13T14:48:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/223804\/"},"modified":"2025-09-13T14:48:13","modified_gmt":"2025-09-13T14:48:13","slug":"alyssa-thomas-historic-season-for-mercury","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/223804\/","title":{"rendered":"Alyssa Thomas&#8217; historic season for Mercury"},"content":{"rendered":"<\/p>\n<p>Phoenix Mercury All-Star Alyssa Thomas set WNBA records for assists in a single season and triple-doubles to garner MVP buzz in her first campaign in the Valley.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas has led a revamped Mercury roster to the playoffs as the No. 4 seed, and Phoenix will host the defending-champion <a href=\"https:\/\/arizonasports.com\/wnba\/phoenix-mercury\/mercury-liberty-sch\/3595650\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">New York Liberty<\/a> in Game 1 on Sunday at 2 p.m. MST.<\/p>\n<p>The veteran has already made the <a href=\"https:\/\/arizonasports.com\/wnba\/phoenix-mercury\/aja-wilson-alyssa-thomas\/3595714\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Associated Press All-WNBA First Team<\/a> after coming over in an offseason trade from the Connecticut Sun.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve spent a lot of years in basketball, both the NBA and the WNBA, and I cannot think of hardly any players that lead to winning like she does,\u201d Mercury general manager Nick U\u2019Ren told Arizona Sports\u2019 Burns &amp; Gambo on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you look at her career, she just doesn\u2019t lose. She wills you to victory and she controls the game. There\u2019s so few players that raise their level to when the competition ratchets up to such a degree. She\u2019s such a competitor. She makes others better. \u2026 Whether she gets a league MVP or not, she\u2019s absolutely deserving of it and being in the conversation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas, A\u2019ja Wilson of Las Vegas and Minnesota\u2019s Napheesa Collier are considered the frontrunners for MVP, with Wilson having won the AP Player of the Year.<\/p>\n<p>With the regular season wrapped up, here are the numbers that stand out when looking back on Thomas\u2019 historic season in Phoenix.<\/p>\n<p>By the numbers: Alyssa Thomas<br \/>\nTriple-double machine<\/p>\n<p>Thomas became the first player in WNBA history to record eight triple-doubles in a season \u2014 breaking her own record \u2014 which was more than the rest of the league combined in 2025. Las Vegas\u2019 Jackie Young was the only other player with multiple triple-doubles (two).<\/p>\n<p>Thomas was not too far off from <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/PhoenixMercury\/status\/1960781874919563636\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">averaging a triple-double<\/a> with 15.4 points, 8.8 rebounds and 9.2 assists.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Only Alyssa Thomas can make history feel this routine.<br \/>AT&#8217;s 7th triple-double of the season! <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/HNs04TJCFC\" rel=\"nofollow\">pic.twitter.com\/HNs04TJCFC<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Phoenix Mercury (@PhoenixMercury) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PhoenixMercury\/status\/1960781874919563636?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">August 27, 2025<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Additionally, Thomas became the first player in league history to record at least 10 points, 15 assists and 15 rebounds in a single game (12 points, 15 assists, 16 rebounds) against the Los Angeles Sparks.<\/p>\n<p>She also tied Chicago\u2019s Angel Reese for the most double-doubles with 23.<\/p>\n<p>Assists leader<\/p>\n<p>Thomas tallied 357 assists this season, beating out Caitlin Clark\u2019s previous record of 337. The WNBA has gradually increased its number of games over the years, but even using assists per game, Thomas is right near the top.<\/p>\n<p>Only Courtney Vandersloot (9.95) averaged more assists per game than Thomas\u2019 9.15 this year, and she did so in 22 games during the shortened 2020 campaign.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Little things from Alyssa Thomas. She is the only player to make at least half of her shots and average four or more assists.<\/p>\n<p>Leading to wins<\/p>\n<p>To U\u2019Ren\u2019s point, the Mercury went 25-14 when Thomas started games this season and 2-3 without her (other injuries being a factor).<\/p>\n<p>The Sun won at least one playoff series in five of the previous six playoffs, reaching the finals in 2019 and 2022. Thomas was an All-Star in both seasons.<\/p>\n<p>MVP finishes<\/p>\n<p>Thomas has not won the MVP in her illustrious career, but she\u2019s come close.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas has finished top 10 in the voting four times, including a second-place finish in 2023 behind Breanna Stewart. In 2023, Thomas received the most first-place votes but lost out as Stewart secured more points in the ranked voting.<\/p>\n<p>Diana Taurasi has won the lone MVP award for the Mercury, doing so in 2009.
