{"id":223993,"date":"2025-09-13T16:30:11","date_gmt":"2025-09-13T16:30:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/223993\/"},"modified":"2025-09-13T16:30:11","modified_gmt":"2025-09-13T16:30:11","slug":"restrictions-in-place-after-water-shortage-reported-in-west-maui","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/223993\/","title":{"rendered":"Restrictions in place after water shortage reported in West Maui"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"text | article-text\">WEST MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) &#8211; The County of Maui\u2019s Department of Water Supply has announced a Stage 2 water shortage for residents in the West Maui area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Maui DWS said the area includes Lahaina, Kahana, Napili-Honokowai, and Honokohau.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Officials said a Stage 2 water shortage is determined by whether anticipated water demand in an area is projected to exceed the available water supply by 16 to 30%.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | text-start article-text\">Maui DWS said that currently, Honokohau Stream flow is low, the inflow to Mahinahina Water Treatment Facility is zero, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/droughtmonitor.unl.edu\/CurrentMap\/StateDroughtMonitor.aspx?HI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/droughtmonitor.unl.edu\/CurrentMap\/StateDroughtMonitor.aspx?HI\">U.S. Drought Monitor forecast of D-2 severe drought conditions<\/a> all support the decision to upgrade to a stage 2 Water Shortage for West Maui.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | text-start article-text\">Maui DWS said that the following water use restrictions apply for West Maui consumers:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"list | article-list\">\n<li>All nonessential water use for commercial and industrial use should cease.<\/li>\n<li>Irrigation is allowed for no more than one day per week according to the following schedule:\n<ul class=\"list |\">\n<li>Wednesday for even-numbered residential addresses.<\/li>\n<li>Thursday for odd-numbered residential addresses.<\/li>\n<li>Friday for even-numbered commercial facilities and multifamily units.<\/li>\n<li>Saturday for even-numbered commercial facilities and multifamily units.<\/li>\n<li>Plant containers, trees, shrubs, and vegetable gardens may be watered one additional day using only drip irrigation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Customers must repair leaks, breaks, or faulty sprinklers within three days of notice or notification to the extent feasible.<\/li>\n<li>The use of potable water at temporary construction meters is prohibited.<\/li>\n<li>Personal washing of vehicles is prohibited.<\/li>\n<li>Parks, school grounds, and recreation fields adhere to the one day a week irrigation schedule.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Agricultural water customers are required to reduce water consumption by 20%.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | text-start article-text\">Maui DWS said the Stage 2 water shortage became effective Sept. 4 and will remain until further notice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">For more information, call DWS at (808) 270-7816.<\/p>\n<p class=\"copyright |\">Copyright 2025 Hawaii News Now.
