\n\tBill Maher<\/a> began his monologue on Real Time with Bill Maher<\/a> by denouncing a \u201cvery ugly week in America\u201d following the assassination of far-right political activist Charlie Kirk<\/a>. <\/p>\n

\n\tAs audiences applauded his entrance, the host thanked viewers for \u201ccoming on a somewhat difficult week\u201d and noted at the extended clapping, \u201cI hope that\u2019s for what I think it\u2019s for \u2014 because I\u2019ve always been someone who wants to talk to people.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s a very ugly week in America with violence of all kinds: political violence, regular violence, a lot of people talking about a civil war,\u201d Maher continued. \u201cAnd then today in Congress, because Charlie Kirk got assassinated, [Colorado Representative] Lauren Boebert stood up and said, \u2018We need to have a prayer.\u2019 So they started to have a silent prayer. And then she started screaming, \u2018No! Silent prayers get silent results.\u2019 As if praying out loud gets big results. So then the Democrats started screaming at her that there was a school shooting in her state. I tell you, so far, the civil war is not very civil.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tMaher went on to say that the alleged shooter, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson,<\/a> was a \u201cstay-at-home son.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThey said he acted alone,\u201d Maher joked, \u201cI\u2019m sure this is not the only thing he does alone.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSpeaking to president Donald Trump\u2019s recent comments on what should be done to bridge the stark partisan divide in the nation, the host said, \u201cToday, they asked the president, \u2018What are you going to do to bring the country together?\u2019 And he said, \u2018I know this is going to get me in trouble, but I could care less.\u2019 He\u2019s a different kind of cat. His message is, \u2018Let the healing stop,’\u201d drawing wan laughs.<\/p>\n

\n\tLater in the episode, which featured guests Charlie Sheen<\/a>, fellow ultra-conservative personality Ben Shapiro<\/a> and The Atlantic staff writer Tim Alberta<\/a>, Maher added, \u201cI like everybody, I talk to everybody, I\u2019m glad I took that approach. But he was shot under a banner that said, \u2018Prove me wrong,\u2019 because he was a debater, and too many people think that the way to do that \u2014 to prove you wrong \u2014\u00a0is to just eliminate you from talking altogether. So the people who mocked his death or justified it, I think you\u2019re gross. I have no use for you. The people who are saying now we\u2019re at war, I\u2019ve no use for you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tKirk, one of the most prominent organizers on the right, particularly in collegiate life via his Turning Point USA organization, was addressing thousands of college students at an outdoor event held at Utah Valley University when he was shot in the neck. About two hours later, Trump announced his death on Truth Social. The president said on Thursday that he would award Kirk the Presidential Medal of Freedom. <\/p>\n

\n\tA divisive figure for his espousal of Christian Nationalism, who had called the passage of the Civil Rights Act a \u201chuge mistake\u201d<\/a> and said that some gun-violence related deaths were \u201cprudent\u201d<\/a> in order to secure the protection of the Second Amendment, though Kirk\u2019s death was swiftly condemned by political officials past and present \u2014 from Democratic New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani to former president Barack Obama \u2014 some online, as Maher mentioned, did not have a lot of empathy for his killing, invoking the late pundit\u2019s own words that \u201cempathy is a made-up, new age term that \u2026 does a lot of damage.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n
