{"id":224663,"date":"2025-09-13T22:41:10","date_gmt":"2025-09-13T22:41:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/224663\/"},"modified":"2025-09-13T22:41:10","modified_gmt":"2025-09-13T22:41:10","slug":"california-temporarily-blocks-trump-policy-barring-some-immigrants-from-food-banks-health-care-head-start-and-more-the-mercury-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/224663\/","title":{"rendered":"California temporarily blocks Trump policy barring some immigrants from food banks, health care, Head Start and more \u2013 The Mercury News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>California has secured a court order temporarily blocking the Trump administration from barring immigrants living in the country illegally from accessing dozens of federally funded programs, including child care, health care and education services.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the Trump administration\u2019s proposed change, federally funded programs would be required to verify recipients\u2019 immigration status \u2014 reversing a Clinton administration policy that extended \u201cpublic benefit\u201d programs to people living in the country without legal permission. The Trump administration said the change was necessary to ensure taxpayer-funded \u201cpublic resources are no longer used to incentivize illegal immigration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The new court order comes a few months after California Attorney General Rob Bonta and 20 other state leaders <a href=\"https:\/\/oag.ca.gov\/news\/press-releases\/attorney-general-bonta-sues-trump-administration-over-cruel-directive-unlawfully\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sued the administration over the policy change in July.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In July, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mercurynews.com\/2025\/07\/25\/california-pauses-trumps-block-on-undocumented-immigrants-from-head-start\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the California-led coalition secured a temporary pause<\/a> preventing the administration from implementing the changes before Sept. 10. The new preliminary injunction \u2014 signed by the U.S. District Court for the District of Rhode Island \u2014 blocks the Trump administration from implementing the changes indefinitely while litigation continues.<\/p>\n<p>Programs included in the Trump administration\u2019s restriction would include childcare services for low-income families, adult education, mental health and substance use disorder programs, temporary housing assistance, food banks, cooling centers and shelters for at-risk youth and domestic violence survivors, among others.<\/p>\n<p>The proposed restriction would also include Head Start \u2014 a national program that serves more than 750,000 low-income children aged 0 to 5-years old across the U.S. The program provides free school meals and medical screenings, child care, and support and job assistance for parents.<\/p>\n<p>Bonta and state leaders said that in addition to causing irreparable harm to vulnerable families, the proposed restrictions barring some immigrants from participation would have a \u201cchilling effect\u201d on all participants of the programs, regardless of immigration status. The states\u2019 lawsuit also said the proposed verification requirements would cost states\u2019 economies hundreds of millions of dollars.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith today\u2019s decision, vital education, nutrition and health programs like Head Start \u2014 and the families who rely on their services \u2014 can breathe a sigh of relief,\u201d said Attorney General Bonta. \u201cThe Trump Administration continues to pull the rug out from under California families just trying to get by, but we\u2019re fighting back.
