data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.the-express.com\/news\/health\/171737\/surprising-early-warning-signs-dementia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">like memory loss<\/a>\u00a0or <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.the-express.com\/news\/health\/163450\/dementia-warning-sign-talking\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trouble speaking<\/a>, but based on a new study, <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.the-express.com\/news\/science\/183058\/neurologist-issues-warning-sleep-habit-harm-brain\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sleep patterns can also be an indicator.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>A recent study used sleep trackers to monitor sleep patterns in 733 women in their 80s, and at the five-year follow-up, 164 of the women who took part in the study had developed mild cognitive impairment and 93 of the women were diagnosed with <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" title=\"Dementia\" href=\"https:\/\/www.the-express.com\/latest\/dementia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dementia<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to the researchers, people who had large jumps in sleepiness, i<a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.the-express.com\/news\/health\/172196\/scientist-sleep-doctor-reveals-shock\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ncluding excessive napping<\/a>, were more at risk of developing dementia.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Based on the study, researches concluded changes in sleep patterns could be considered an \u201cearly marker\u201d for dementia in women in \u201colder women.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Clifford Segil, DO, a neurologist at Providence Saint John\u2019s Health Center in Santa Monica, CA, said: \u201cIf you ask two different neurologist, you may get two different answer as we still don\u2019t know the reason we sleep.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The National Institutes of Aging has put together a list of early symptoms of dementia, listed below:\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Memory loss, poor judgment, and confusion<\/li>\n<li>Trouble speaking, understanding and expressing thoughts<\/li>\n<li>Wandering and getting lost in a familiar area<\/li>\n<li>Difficulty handling money and paying bills<\/li>\n<li>Repeating questions<\/li>\n<li>Using unusual words to refer to familiar objects<\/li>\n<li>Taking longer to complete normal daily tasks<\/li>\n<li>Losing interest in normal daily activities<\/li>\n<li>Hallucinating or having delusions or paranoia<\/li>\n<li>Acting impulsively<\/li>\n<li>Not caring about other people\u2019s feelings<\/li>\n<li>Losing balance and problems with movement<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If there\u2019s something going on, and there are concerns about dementia, people are advised to go to a healthcare provider for a physical and to speak to the practitioner about your or your loved one\u2019s symptoms.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"When it comes to dementia
