As temperatures (finally) cool, the Lone Star State is entering its peak season for hiking and other outdoor activities.<\/p>\n

Located on the edge of the Texas Hill Country, San Antonio is lucky to have a plethora of gorgeous state parks nearby. And thanks to recent expansions and acquisitions, locals have even more options to get some fresh air. Indeed, Texas has added more than 6,800 acres of new parkland since January.<\/p>\n

In addition to hiking and biking trails, many of these parks also offer opportunities for camping, picnics, horseback riding, bird-watching, and other activities for outdoorsy types of every persuasion. <\/p>\n

Time to stop doom-scrolling, go outside and \u201ctouch grass.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"AnBear Creek State Park
The newest addition to this list is Bear Creek State Park, a 1,720-acre acquisition announced by Texas Parks and Wildlife in August 2025. Located less than a mile from Garner State Park, Bear Creek joins 3,120- acre Post Oak Ridge State Park near Colorado Bend and the 3,703-acre addition at Enchanted Rock State Natural Area. Birdwatchers have the chance to view endangered species such as the Golden Cheeked Warbler while canyons and rivers offer a picturesque backdrop for hikes. This new acquisition has yet to be open to the public while biologists conduct resource surveys and park planners develop management plans and interpretive exhibits for future visitors, which Texas Parks and Wildlife offiicials say could take \u201cmany months<\/a>.\u201d But rest assured, the Current will announce when it\u2019s open to exploration. \"\"Pedernales Falls State Park<\/strong>

Not too far from Johnson City are the tranquil, though sometimes turbulent, waters at Pedernales Falls. This park should be visited by folks who thrive in natural scenery since it offers camping, hiking, biking, bird-watching and horseback riding as well as a butterfly garden.
