Days later, Israel and Iran, who were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/06\/22\/what-to-know-israel-iran-conflict-us-intervention\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">engaged in an armed conflict<\/a> since June 13, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/06\/24\/iran-attack-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">agreed upon a ceasefire,<\/a> and Trump said U.S. and Iranian officials will talk next week. As fears of the conflict evolving into a broader war appeared to subside, the stock market made significant gains, closing out the week at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/06\/27\/global-shares-us-stocks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">all-time highs.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In other news from around the globe, U.S. officials attended the NATO summit this week where member nations agreed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/06\/24\/nato-trump-summit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">increase their defense spending,<\/a> democratic socialist and state lawmaker <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/06\/25\/zohran-mamdani-who\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Zohran Mamdami<\/a> declared victory over former Gov. Andrew Cuomo in New York City\u2019s Democratic mayoral primary race and the Supreme Court <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/06\/27\/supreme-court-birthright-citizenship\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">issued a slew of opinions<\/a>, covering everything from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/06\/28\/birthright-citizenship-ruling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">immigration<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/06\/27\/supreme-court-lgbtq\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">education<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/06\/27\/supreme-court-kids-pornography\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pornography<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/06\/27\/high-court-ruling-injunctions-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">injunction powers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Locally, Gov. JB Pritzker officially announced his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/06\/26\/gov-jb-pritzker-running-third-term\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bid for reelection<\/a> this week, amid speculation that he may run for president in 2028. Universal unveiled its plans for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/06\/26\/universal-horror-experience-chicago-casino\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a horror-themed attraction<\/a> in Chicago, a \u201cyear-round immersive horror experience\u201d that is slated to open in 2027. And the Chicago Police Department honored one of their own this week. Officers, loved ones and city leaders gathered for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/06\/25\/krystal-rivera-funeral-begins\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">funeral of Krystal Rivera<\/a>, the Chicago police officer mistakenly shot and killed by her partner earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, new Chicago Public Schools Interim CEO Macquline King addressed her first school board meeting, citing the district\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/06\/26\/interim-cps-chief-macquline-king-addresses-first-school-board-meeting-cites-730-million-deficit-as-top-priority\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$730 million deficit<\/a> as her top priority. By Friday, CPS <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/06\/27\/cps-ctu-layoffs-school-macquline-king\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">laid off 161 employees<\/a> and eliminated another 209 open positions in a cost-cutting move to plug that shortfall.<\/p>\n<p>The Oklahoma City Thunder <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/06\/22\/game-7-shai-gilgeous-alexander-scores-29-points-and-thunder-beat-pacers-103-91-for-nba-title\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">beat the Indiana Pacers<\/a> in Game 7 of the finals Sunday night to win the NBA championship. Three days later, the NBA draft opened. Cooper Flagg was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/06\/25\/cooper-flagg-the-new-maine-man-for-the-mavericks-as-the-no-1-pick-in-the-nba-draft\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">picked first overall<\/a> and the Bulls drafted two new players: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/06\/25\/chicago-bulls-draft-noa-essengue\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Noa Essengue<\/a>, a 6-foot-10 French teenager, and Australian forward <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/06\/26\/chicago-bulls-trade-down-nba-draft\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lachlan Olbrich<\/a>. Plus, the first round of the NHL draft took place Friday, with the Chicago Blackhawks selecting the top-ranked international player <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/06\/27\/chicago-blackhawks-anton-frondell-nhl-draft-no-3-pick\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">with the No. 3 pick.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, in the world of baseball, both of Chicago\u2019s MLB teams reached <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/06\/27\/chicago-cubs-white-sox-second-half\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the halfway point of their seasons<\/a> \u2014 though the Cubs boast the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/06\/27\/chicago-cubs-takeaways-halfway-mark\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">significantly better record<\/a>\u00a0of the two. Also this week, a White Sox fan was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/06\/25\/chicago-white-sox-ketel-marte-fan-incident\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ejected from Rate Field<\/a> and banned from all major-league ballparks after heckling Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte.<\/p>\n<p>Still figuring out your weekend plans?
