{"id":224940,"date":"2025-09-14T01:10:10","date_gmt":"2025-09-14T01:10:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/224940\/"},"modified":"2025-09-14T01:10:10","modified_gmt":"2025-09-14T01:10:10","slug":"bobby-okereke-pushes-back-on-criticism-of-his-giants-tackling","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/224940\/","title":{"rendered":"Bobby Okereke pushes back on criticism of his Giants tackling"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>ARLINGTON, Texas \u2014 The numbers are there, and Bobby Okereke is not going to apologize for them.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Tucked deep inside the <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/09\/07\/sports\/russell-wilson-has-ugly-giants-debut-in-season-opening-loss-to-commanders\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Giants\u2019 21-6 season-opening loss<\/a> to the Commanders was Okereke amassing 16 total tackles in the game \u2014 seven solo and nine assisted. That is a ton of tackles, but the overall results on defense were uninspiring, as the Giants allowed 220 rushing yards. <\/p>\n<p>As a result, Okereke\u2019s performance was criticized on some social media platforms, focusing on where the tackles were made \u2014 too far down the field.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Okereke did not see it that way.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.49926794;display:block\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"37104673\" width=\"885\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/washington-commanders-running-back-jacory-110905572.jpg\" alt=\"New York Giants vs. Washington Commanders football game.\" class=\"wp-image-37104673\"  \/>Washington Commanders running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt (22) runs the ball against New York Giants linebacker Bobby Okereke (58) during the second quarter at Northwest Stadium. Peter Casey-Imagn Images<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you\u2019re flying around making tackles, you\u2019re in the game and you\u2019re tackling the ball,\u201d Okereke told The Post. \u201cI think the quality tackle is whether you make it or miss it, whether you make the tackle at 10 yards or you make it at 5 or you make the tackle at the line of scrimmage, as long as you are decisive in your pursuit then the tackle opportunity is just wherever it presents itself.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.49926794;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"37104674\" width=\"885\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/new-york-giants-linebacker-bobby-109126125.jpg\" alt=\"Bobby Okereke of the New York Giants at training camp.\" class=\"wp-image-37104674\"  \/>Giants linebacker Bobby Okereke answers questions from reporters during practice. Noah K. Murray-NY Post<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re playing hesitant, not getting downhill, then if you\u2019re just making it at 5, then OK, that\u2019s a quality of tackle play. But if a play breaks through and you make it at 5 or make it 10 yards, I wouldn\u2019t necessarily fault the player for that tackle. The player is just making that tackle where it presents itself.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Okereke did reprimand himself for a missed tackle of running back Austin Ekeler in the fourth quarter, which he said was a byproduct of having \u201cbad eyes\u201d by sneaking a peak at quarterback Jayden Daniels, which led to a bad angle taken on Ekeler.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was a play that kind of bit me in the ass and one I definitely want back,\u201d Okereke said. Not winning was \u201cthe most important thing,\u201d he said, but coming out of the game healthy allowed him to look ahead to the Week 2 matchup with the Cowboys.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor me, I feel like I was flying around,\u201d Okereke said. \u201cObviously when a player has 16 tackles they\u2019re moving out there, they\u2019re in the flow of the game, for sure. From that standpoint I feel like I was productive. It was a decent start.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>DE Chauncey Golston spent his first four NFL seasons with the Cowboys before signing a three-year, $18 million contract with the Giants.
