New York and New Jersey did not issue orders to lower flags for slain conservative activist Charlie Kirk, leaving Bergen County under fire<\/a> for following state protocol instead of President Trump\u2019s proclamation.<\/p>\n

Trump signed<\/a> a directive Wednesday ordering U.S. flags nationwide lowered through Sunday at 6 p.m., calling Kirk \u201ca truly Great American Patriot.\u201d<\/p>\n

Flags at the White House came down that afternoon.<\/p>\n

President Trump ordered flags lowered nationwide to honor Charlie Kirk, but New Jersey kept them at full staff. Google<\/p>\n

But in New Jersey, the official state flag status<\/a> listed \u201cfull staff,\u201d and Bergen County followed suit. New York<\/a> also kept their flag status high, while Pennsylvania and Delaware complied with Trump\u2019s directive.<\/p>\n

Several other counties and municipalities in New Jersey did the same. A spokesperson for the Bergen County Executive\u2019s Office told The Post the county follows the state\u2019s daily guidance, which that day called for full staff.<\/p>\n

The county also reiterated the policy in a Facebook post,<\/a> adding it \u201ccondemns all forms of political violence and rejects hate in every form.\u201d<\/p>\n

Political hopeful Jay Costa blasted Bergen County on Instagram for \u201cignoring federal orders\u201d and vowed voters would hold Democrats accountable in November. REUTERS<\/p>\n

The move infuriated conservatives who said the county was defying Trump.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Bergen County Democrats refuse to lower the flags to half-staff for the assassination of Charlie Kirk and have ignored federal orders to do so!\u201d Republican commissioner candidate Jay Costa blasted on Instagram.<\/a> \u201cTruly despicable! They deserve to lose in November.\u201d<\/p>\n

Experts note that while the president can mandate flags on federal property, states and local governments don\u2019t have to comply.<\/p>\n

\u201cStates, businesses and private individuals have the choice to follow the federal government or not,\u201d vexillologist Michael Green told NJ Advance Media.<\/p>\n

Kirk, 32, the co-founder of Turning Point USA, was shot <\/a>Tuesday while speaking at Utah Valley University. His death has sparked a wave of tributes, and political fights, across the nation.<\/p>\n

Police have identified 22-year-old Tyler Robinson as the suspected shooter<\/a>. Federal agents have raided his Utah apartment and childhood home as the investigation develops.<\/p>\n
