{"id":22583,"date":"2025-06-28T19:28:08","date_gmt":"2025-06-28T19:28:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/22583\/"},"modified":"2025-06-28T19:28:08","modified_gmt":"2025-06-28T19:28:08","slug":"rob-mcelhenney-files-to-legally-change-his-name-to-rob-mac","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/22583\/","title":{"rendered":"Rob McElhenney Files to Legally Change His Name to &#8216;Rob Mac&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/rob-mcelhenney\/\" id=\"auto-tag_rob-mcelhenney\" data-tag=\"rob-mcelhenney\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rob McElhenney<\/a> is making it legal: The \u201cIt\u2019s Always Sunny in Philadelphia\u201d and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/welcome-to-wrexham\/\" id=\"auto-tag_welcome-to-wrexham\" data-tag=\"welcome-to-wrexham\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Welcome to Wrexham<\/a>\u201d star has legally filed in Los Angeles to change his name to \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/rob-mac\/\" id=\"auto-tag_rob-mac\" data-tag=\"rob-mac\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rob Mac<\/a>.\u201d Mac confirmed the news to Variety on Friday; it was first reported by TMZ.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tVariety readers won\u2019t be surprised by the news; Mac first revealed the plan in a <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/tv\/features\/rob-mcelhenney-kaitlin-olson-wrexham-sunny-falling-in-love-1236404041\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cover story last month<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAt the time, Mac told us he might be changing his name to that easier pronunciation. \u201cPeople already call me \u2018Rob Mac\u2019 or \u2018Mac,\u2019 obviously from the TV show. It just makes things so much easier,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tEagle-eyed reporters may have noticed that all of FX\u2019s recent press releases for both \u201cSunny\u201d and \u201cWrexham\u201d have already started crediting him as \u201cRob Mac,\u201d so it was all leading up to this.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cMcElhenney\u201d has never been easy for people to say, so much so that Mac\u2019s \u201cWrexham\u201d partner Ryan Reynolds created an entire music video last year for Mac\u2019s birthday as a pronunciation primer. (It really is quite simple: Say it as \u201cMackle-Henney.\u201d) <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBut as Mac\u2019s new company More Better Industries has upped its global investments, including a pair of soccer teams in Colombia and Mexico, in addition to stakes in apparel, tech and alcohol companies, he found that his last name was a constant source of confusion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThat\u2019s why, \u201cas our business and our storytelling is expanding into other regions of the world and other languages in which my name is even harder to pronounce, I\u2019m just going by Rob Mac,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cAs I get older, and people are more prone to calling me \u2018Mr.\u2019 or\u2019 Sir,\u2019 I just say Rob or Rob Mac. And I find that that makes things a lot simpler and easier. People already call me Rob Mac or Mac, obviously, from the television show and it just makes things so much easier.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBefore committing to the change, Mac was worried that he might be disrespecting his ancestry. \u201cI did a deep dive into my my ancestry, and so I was always very proud of the name, which is why I didn\u2019t change it in the beginning, when everybody was begging me to,\u201d he said. \u201cWhen you\u2019re first starting out, they\u2019re like, \u2018let\u2019s just have a stage name.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBut he recently discovered even some relatives had tweaked \u201cMcElhenney\u201d over the years. \u201cIt turns out, as I did my genealogy and I got it back, my last name has been changed so many times. As late as the \u201960s, there were an offshoot of the McElhenneys that changed our name. And so it\u2019s not like everybody was so precious about it prior to 1965.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAnd when family members dropped by to celebrate his birthday earlier this year, they admitted that they were eager to change the name as well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cMy brother said, \u2018I was actually considering running for government in Culver City, and I was going to be \u2018Pat Mac,\u2019\u201d he said.
