{"id":226094,"date":"2025-09-14T12:05:14","date_gmt":"2025-09-14T12:05:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/226094\/"},"modified":"2025-09-14T12:05:14","modified_gmt":"2025-09-14T12:05:14","slug":"china-launches-probes-targeting-us-semiconductors-ahead-of-madrid-trade-talks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/226094\/","title":{"rendered":"China launches probes targeting US semiconductors ahead of Madrid trade talks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) \u2014 China launched two probes targeting the U.S. semiconductor sector Saturday ahead of <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/treasury-bessent-spain-china-trump-e70c554b5d34cd8f8de30093e9126d4f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">talks between the two nations in Spain<\/a> this week on trade, national security and the ownership of social media platform TikTok.<\/p>\n<p>China\u2019s Ministry of Commerce announced an anti-dumping investigation into certain analog IC chips imported from the U.S. The investigation will target some commodity interface IC chips and gate driver IC chips, which are commonly made by U.S. companies such as Texas Instruments and ON Semiconductor.<\/p>\n<p>The ministry separately announced an anti-discrimination probe into U.S. measures against China\u2019s chip sector.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is set to meet Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng in Madrid between Sunday and Wednesday, He\u2019s office said.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. measures such as export curbs and tariffs \u201cconstitute the containment and suppression of China\u2019s development of high-tech industries\u201d such as advanced computer chips and artificial intelligence, a Chinese commerce ministry spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p>The announcements of the probes follow the U.S. on Friday adding 23 Chinese companies to an \u201centity list\u201d of businesses that will face restrictions for allegedly acting against U.S. national security and foreign policy interests. The list includes two Chinese companies accused of acquiring chipmaking equipment for major Chinese chipmaker SMIC.<\/p>\n<p>The meetings between Bessent and He in Madrid will be the latest in a series of negotiations aimed at reducing trade tensions and postponing the enactment of higher tariffs on each other\u2019s goods.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. and Chinese counterparts previously held discussions in Geneva in May, London in June and Stockholm in July. The two governments have agreed to several <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/china-us-tariffs-timeline-negotiations-switzerland-d9f1d0e10d328a5d32413016d9d909f2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">90-day pauses<\/a> on a series of increasing reciprocal tariffs, staving off an all-out trade war.<\/p>\n<p>Bessent described the talks during the last round in Stockholm as <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/us-china-trade-stockholm-tariffs-bessent-lifeng-2cffb7de31169afc8de0c02bedb4683a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cvery fulsome.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe just need to de-risk with certain, strategic industries, whether it\u2019s the rare earths, semiconductors, medicines, and we talked about what we could do together to get into balance within the relationship,\u201d Bessent said at the time.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. President Donald Trump and former President Joe Biden placed curbs on China\u2019s <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/china-technology-biden-outbound-invest-treasury-5710f7446b6de614d6ac8ea569904a9c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">access to advanced semiconductors<\/a> including restrictions on the sale of chipmaking equipment to the country.
