{"id":22651,"date":"2025-06-28T20:02:15","date_gmt":"2025-06-28T20:02:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/22651\/"},"modified":"2025-06-28T20:02:15","modified_gmt":"2025-06-28T20:02:15","slug":"malaysia-cracks-down-on-books-deemed-harmful-to-public-morality","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/22651\/","title":{"rendered":"Malaysia cracks down on books deemed harmful to public morality"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">A Kuala Lumpur bookstore was raided this week by officials from Malaysia&#8217;s Ministry of Home Affairs who seized two horror novels suspected to have gone against public morality.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It was Wednesday evening at Fixi bookstore when officials from Malaysia&#8217;s Home Affairs Ministry arrived to confiscate copies of Jelik, a horror series that means &#8220;repulsive&#8221; in Malay.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But Fixi founder Amir Muhammad was relaxed when he spoke to the ABC.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;This has happened to us four times,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Image shows authorities in neon green vests investigating a bookstore.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/09df0df91cefa2e7cefdf0b22612668d\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">PEN Malaysia has condemned the raid on a Kuala Lumpur bookstore, saying it was a form of intimidation. (X\/@BukuFixi)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Jelik, written by Ismi Fa Ismail, is about twin brothers who go missing while filming a documentary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It contains gory and psychological elements.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Muhammad said he was told authorities had taken the books to assess whether they contravened Malaysia&#8217;s Printing and Publications Act.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;If they ban it, they&#8217;ll say it has something to do with going against moral values,&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>  Mr Muhammad said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Free speech advocacy group PEN Malaysia condemned the raid.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;This act of intimidation violates the right to publish, sell and freedom of literary works,&#8221; it said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Bookstores \u2026 [are] an important space for debate in a democratic country.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The Malaysian government has been contacted for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Australian book made illegal in Malaysia<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">At least 13 books have been banned in Malaysia this year \u2014 ranging from romance books that have gone viral on TikTok, to children&#8217;s and young adult fiction that explore gender and sexuality.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Melbourne-based children&#8217;s author Scott Stuart woke up in February to discover his picture book My Shadow is Purple had been prohibited from sale in Malaysia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Australian children&#8217;s publisher Larrikin House, which published it back in 2022, described it as a book that &#8220;considers gender beyond binary in a vibrant spectrum of colour&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It wasn&#8217;t a book about murder, or assault, or any crime that got banned for harming morality,&#8221; Stuart said in an Instagram post several days after his book was banned.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;They chose to ban a book about being yourself.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The ABC contacted Stuart for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Malaysia&#8217;s Ministry of Home Affairs said the book had been banned because it &#8220;may be harmful to morals&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Same-sex acts are illegal in Malaysia, a Muslim-majority country, although convictions are rare.<\/p>\n<p>Detained for working on a banned book<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">At least on paper, the punishments for distributing or possessing banned literature in Malaysia are harsh.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Those found guilty of printing, importing and circulating the books can face up to three years in prison, a fine of 20,000 Malaysian ringgit ($7,200), or both.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">For someone found in possession of one of the banned titles, there are fines of up to 5,000 ringgit ($1,800).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Sydney journalist Kean Wong was detained last year by Malaysian authorities for being the editor of a banned non-fiction book entitled Rebirth: Reformasi, Resistance, and Hope in New Malaysia.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A man in a purple shirt and glasses holding several books\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/0a69d443e2d27b2bdcd97a4947a49792\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Kean Wong says politicians in South-East Asia use &#8220;external enemies&#8221; to distract from domestic issues. (Supplied: GerakBudaya)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Malaysian bookstores were subjected to routine checks by authorities, he said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;They come at least once a year, and sometimes they do it more than once a year,&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>  Mr Chong said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Left-wing literature including books about communism used to be targeted, but scrutiny has shifted to books with LGBTQ themes, Mr Chong said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Curtin University ethics professor Anthony Langlois agreed with Dr Shukri that censorship was often ineffective.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But he said book bans could still be harmful \u2014 particularly to Malaysia&#8217;s democratic credentials.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The idea behind a democracy is that there is still this space where we have a constant, ongoing debate about who we want to be as a society,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Political distraction via &#8216;external enemies&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Malaysia is not the only country where book bans are common.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Book bans are at an <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2024-05-27\/what-is-driving-book-bans-in-america-australia\/103882982\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/103882982\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">all-time high in the United States<\/a>, with 10,000 books banned in 2023-24 according to free expression advocacy group PEN America.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In Australia, some conservative religious groups have tried to have <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2023-08-25\/yass-council-votes-against-banning-welcome-to-sex-book\/102773346\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/102773346\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">children&#8217;s books about gender and sexuality<\/a> banned.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But South-East Asian governments are particularly enthusiastic when it comes to censorship.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s more, I think, of an ASEAN thing, about that sense of stability and societal cohesiveness that is prioritised,&#8221;
