I was a gymnast for 17 years and did competitive cheerleading, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a32958151\/calories-burned-swimming\/\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a32958151\/calories-burned-swimming\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"swimming\" data-node-id=\"0.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">swimming<\/a>, and diving. In college, I did an occasional <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a62752410\/7-day-ultimate-abs-challenge\/\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a62752410\/7-day-ultimate-abs-challenge\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"15-minute abs workout\" data-node-id=\"0.3\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">15-minute abs workout<\/a> or a 10-day challenge to get the \u201cperfect glutes,\u201d but I was never consistent with a routine. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"1\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">When I graduated nursing school at 26, I eventually started night shifts, worked in the emergency room, and began traveling on nursing assignments too. It was hard to adjust to my new schedule and I had no energy or motivation to work out. I was also too tired to cook, so I relied on fast food, vending machines, and the hospital cafeteria which offered fried options like chicken nuggets, burgers, and French fries. <\/p>\n<p id=\"i-poured-my-energy-into-work-and-personal-relationships-and-always-had-an-excuse-why-i-couldnt-put-effort-into-my-own-well-being\" data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"2\" class=\"body-text css-i9p093 emevuu60\">I poured my energy into work and personal relationships, and always had an excuse why I couldn\u2019t put effort into my own well-being. I didn\u2019t necessarily realize it at the time, but over the next eight years, I fell into an unhealthy pattern of never prioritizing myself. <\/p>\n<p>In January 2024, while on a nursing assignment, I decided enough was enough. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"6\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">I was alone and had nothing else to do aside from work, so I committed to working out.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"7\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">At the time, I was 210 pounds, which was the heaviest I had ever been, so my initial goal was to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/weight-loss\/a42112641\/7-day-meal-plan-for-weight-loss\/\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/weight-loss\/a42112641\/7-day-meal-plan-for-weight-loss\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"lose weight\" data-node-id=\"7.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lose weight<\/a>. I wasn\u2019t sure where to begin, so I followed personal trainer and nutrition specialist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/makayla_thomas_fit\/?hl=en\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/makayla_thomas_fit\/?hl=en\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"MaKayla Kim Thomas\" data-node-id=\"7.3\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MaKayla Kim Thomas<\/a> (you may know her as Makayla Thomas Fit on Instagram) and joined her 13-week workout plan, which focused on HIIT-style, full-body workouts and lightweight resistance training. The program was five days a week and provided gym workouts as well as at-home modifications, which I appreciated depending on my schedule, and most workouts were 45 minutes to an hour long.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"9\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">My first week was hard. It felt good to get back into exercise, but I was quickly winded and sore every day. Previously, I would have skipped a workout if I was sore, but I knew I had to stick to a routine to get stronger. And I was right. By week three, I was less winded, less sore, and looked forward to my workouts. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"10\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">I also followed MaKayla\u2019s cookbook which provided a variety of low-calorie, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/food\/a62601233\/high-protein-meal-prep-manual-pdf\/\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/food\/a62601233\/high-protein-meal-prep-manual-pdf\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"high-protein recipes\" data-node-id=\"10.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">high-protein recipes<\/a> and the necessary shopping list. I rid my kitchen of processed snacks, ditched fast food, and stuck to her recipes for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I was still working night shifts, so I also learned to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/food\/a38554718\/how-to-meal-prep\/\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/food\/a38554718\/how-to-meal-prep\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"meal prep\" data-node-id=\"10.3\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">meal prep<\/a> and brought my own food to the hospital. Initially, I <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/weight-loss\/a19713960\/how-to-count-macros-for-weight-loss\/\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/weight-loss\/a19713960\/how-to-count-macros-for-weight-loss\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"tracked macros\" data-node-id=\"10.5\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tracked macros<\/a>, but once I understood portion size I ate intuitively. At the end of the 13 weeks, I lost 18 pounds and had no intention of turning back. I felt great and wanted to continue being the healthiest version of myself I could be.<\/p>\n<p><strong data-node-id=\"12.0\">Now, at 34, I train six days a week and prioritize muscle hypertrophy.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"13\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">These days, I program my own workouts to focus on full-body strength, with a different muscle focus each day. I found an incredible community at the 24-hour gym and fitness club <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicbodyworksgym.net\" title=\"https:\/\/www.classicbodyworksgym.net\" data-outlook-id=\"a8c885e5-dc2a-440a-939e-2f6333826eb0\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.classicbodyworksgym.net\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Classic Bodyworks\" data-node-id=\"13.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Classic Bodyworks<\/a> in my area.<\/p>\n<ul data-node-id=\"14\" class=\"css-1wk73g0 emevuu60\">\n<li data-node-id=\"14.0\"><strong data-node-id=\"14.0.0\">Monday:<\/strong> Quads, hamstrings, and calves<\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"14.1\"><strong data-node-id=\"14.1.0\">Tuesday: <\/strong>Back and biceps <\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"14.2\"><strong data-node-id=\"14.2.0\">Wednesday: <\/strong>Glutes <\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"14.3\"><strong data-node-id=\"14.3.0\">Thursday:<\/strong> Shoulders and triceps <\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"14.4\"><strong data-node-id=\"14.4.0\">Friday:<\/strong> Full body<\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"14.5\"><strong data-node-id=\"14.5.0\">Saturday:<\/strong> Core<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"16\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">On lower-body and full-body days, I do six to eight moves per session, with four to five sets of four to eight reps per exercise. I do the same reps and sets for upper-body, but I have a nagging shoulder injury, so I limit myself to four to five moves per session. For core, I typically do a 30-minute, pilates-inspired ab workout. On top of that, I finish every workout with 20 to 30 minutes of cardio, whether it\u2019s the StairMaster or incline walking on the treadmill (I love the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a44176037\/12-3-30-treadmill-workout\/\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a44176037\/12-3-30-treadmill-workout\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"12-3-30 workout\" data-node-id=\"16.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">12-3-30 workout<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"18\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">Glutes are my favorite muscle to train, but I\u2019ve also been loving biceps. At the beginning of my journey, I could barely <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a60321512\/hip-thrust-muscles\/\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a60321512\/hip-thrust-muscles\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"hip thrust\" data-node-id=\"18.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hip thrust<\/a> 200 pounds, but now, less than a year later, I can thrust 425 pounds. I can also crush eight reps of a 50-pound biceps curl, which is a huge win, because a few months ago, I could barely do one rep. I go at least once a week for two hours at a time and practice tumbling, handstands, and the uneven bars. I read on my Kindle during daily cardio sessions and swear it makes the time go by faster.<\/p>\n<p><strong data-node-id=\"24.0\">These three factors are essential to my strength transformation success.<\/strong> <strong data-node-id=\"25.0\">1. But now, I prioritize my exercise routine and follow the two excuse rule, which means I must have two valid reasons to entirely skip a workout. Family gatherings, injuries, or a busy travel schedule are legitimate reasons, but I no longer put fitness on the back burner. I have one <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a45547274\/how-many-rest-days-a-week\/\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a45547274\/how-many-rest-days-a-week\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"rest day\" data-node-id=\"29.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rest day<\/a> built into my schedule, so there\u2019s wiggle room to rearrange my off day if needed, but I hold myself accountable and do my best to get some form of movement at least six days a week. <\/p>\n<p><strong data-node-id=\"31.0\">3. I gave myself grace and show up every day.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"32\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">Whether you\u2019re on a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/weight-loss\/a62653598\/sarah-infinger-weight-loss-success\/\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/weight-loss\/a62653598\/sarah-infinger-weight-loss-success\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"weight loss journey\" data-node-id=\"32.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">weight loss journey<\/a> or trying to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a30611295\/how-to-lose-fat-gain-muscle\/\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a30611295\/how-to-lose-fat-gain-muscle\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"build muscle\" data-node-id=\"32.3\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">build muscle<\/a>, progress takes time and patience. There are weeks the scale doesn\u2019t budge or days my body feels tired and I have to decrease the intensity of my workout, but I\u2019ve learned to always give myself grace. Not every day is perfect, but progress is about showing up and consistently putting in the work.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"33\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">As a nurse, I take care of people for a living, but after years of neglecting my own well-being, I\u2019m finally showing up for myself. Since committing to strength training, I\u2019ve lost 50 pounds, built a ton of muscle, and feel better than ever.
