{"id":226928,"date":"2025-09-14T20:00:10","date_gmt":"2025-09-14T20:00:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/226928\/"},"modified":"2025-09-14T20:00:10","modified_gmt":"2025-09-14T20:00:10","slug":"activists-rally-in-philadelphia-to-protect-presidents-house-exhibit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/226928\/","title":{"rendered":"Activists rally in Philadelphia to protect President\u2019s House exhibit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From Philly and the Pa. suburbs to South Jersey and Delaware, what would you like WHYY News to cover? <a href=\"#Section1\">Let us know!<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>Historians, community leaders, activists and Philadelphians gathered Saturday at The President\u2019s House, located at 6th and Market streets, to oppose potential changes to the historic site\u2019s exhibit on slavery during George Washington\u2019s presidency.\n<\/p>\n<p>Attorneys Michael Coard and Michelle Flamer, representing the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.avengingtheancestors.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Avenging the Ancestors Coalition<\/a> and the President\u2019s House Steering Committee, led the program and gave updates on actions to preserve the memorial.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn May, the Interior Department secretary, appointed by the president, targeted this site with a Sept. 17 deadline, so this coming Wednesday, this place could be shut down,\u201d Coard said. \u201cBut we have a strategic activist strategy, a strategic political strategy and a strategic legal strategy.\u201d\n  <\/p>\n<p>Organizers described the rally as the kickoff of a public campaign to defend <a href=\"https:\/\/whyy.org\/articles\/slavery-philadelphia-trump-independence-mall-presidents-house-history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the site\u2019s exhibit<\/a>, officially titled President\u2019s House: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/inde\/learn\/historyculture\/places-presidentshousesite.htm?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cFreedom and Slavery in the Making of a New Nation.\u201d<\/a> The outdoor memorial opened in 2010 after years of community advocacy and archaeological research confirming that Washington enslaved nine people at the site. Many of the leaders and attendees at the rally played a leading role in the movement for its creation.
