{"id":227097,"date":"2025-09-14T21:32:28","date_gmt":"2025-09-14T21:32:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/227097\/"},"modified":"2025-09-14T21:32:28","modified_gmt":"2025-09-14T21:32:28","slug":"museum-of-modern-art-exhibition-spotlights-work-of-staten-island-design-professor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/227097\/","title":{"rendered":"Museum of Modern Art exhibition spotlights work of Staten Island design professor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"P72VZRKND5C5NDDSKEO7AF6HP4\">NEW YORK \u2014 The Museum of Modern Art is showcasing the work of artist and former Staten Islander <a href=\"http:\/\/flong.com\/archive\/bio\/en\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"http:\/\/flong.com\/archive\/bio\/en\/index.html\">Golan Levin,<\/a> a professor of electronic art at Carnegie Mellon University.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"W5QFNDSHZNCMRA3RZ2HTQCMRX4\">The exhibition, \u201cPirouette: Turning Points in Design,\u201d highlights objects that challenge conventional thinking and spur new forms of creativity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"JPS375U5QRBTBA2637D2RQMF4I\">The exhibit, curated by Paola Antonelli, opened on Jan. 26 and will be on view through Nov. 15, offering visitors a chance to explore the role of design as a force for innovation, featuring objects that have reshaped the way people interact with the world around them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"6Z4VWXZOKRCRDOFOWWCP4Z4HHM\">The exhibition was organized by Paola Antonelli, Senior Curator, Department of Architecture and Design, and Director, Research and Development, with Maya Ellerkmann, Curatorial Assistant, Department of Architecture and Design.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"2NUXW7NVUVDAXNKCGRCHVMUTJ4\">Levin collaborated with alumnus Shawn Sims on the Free Universal Construction Kit, a matrix of 3D-printable adapters that allows complete interoperability between 10 popular children\u2019s construction toys. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"7EHF374DVJDRDJANKXMKY5COL4\">By connecting pieces from different systems, the kit encourages new forms of play while prompting reflection on intellectual property, open-source culture and design limitations.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"AP\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"hero-image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/A6FLRZODIBHDDDHPCN32TAYFCI.jpg\" \/>This photo shows the Museum of Modern Art. (AP Photo\/Mary Altaffer)ASSOCIATED PRESS<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"N5ZUSIX5WRFWHBAM7TK63ZHVEM\">The kit includes roughly 80 adapter bricks that anyone can download and 3D-print at home, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/art.cmu.edu\/news\/faculty-news\/golan-levins-moma\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/art.cmu.edu\/news\/faculty-news\/golan-levins-moma\/\">Carnegie Mellon\u2019s website.<\/a> <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ZABR5KMDRFEZRNHV6Q3WYF7H4M\">Levin said the idea came from a personal experience with his 4-year-old son.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"D46C6YJSIJDP5PIXGMEY5PR77E\">\u201cThe project is the Free Universal Construction Kit, which I created in collaboration with my student, Shawn Sims,\u201d Levin said on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moma.org\/audio\/playlist\/344\/360\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.moma.org\/audio\/playlist\/344\/360\">MoMA website.<\/a> \u201cI had this experience with my 4-year-old son, when he was trying to connect Legos and Tinker Toys. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"XIA22OEJUNCDTMZK464AVMVU7E\">\u201cHe became very frustrated that they wouldn\u2019t connect\u2014and that they would even not be designed to connect was a mystery to him. And it occurred to me that this was actually not entirely unlike what we experienced as adults when we have software systems. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"LBJ5XNI7G5ETPICAEXEUAVKU7E\">\u201cIf you purchase a computer from one manufacturer, you can\u2019t play a video file from someone who has a different operating system. I consider this to be a significant limitation of how we can work and think.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"KRIN2WS24ZFYXLEPJSC36GDCWI\">He added that the Free Universal Construction Kit is meant to be more than just a toy adapter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"WEVYYQG7OJDS3BLOODSLJHKM2I\">\u201cThe Free Universal Construction Kit is a physicalized metaphor of this, using something we can all relate to, which is these children\u2019s toys,\u201d Levin said. \u201cBy seeing these adapters, we can understand the ways in which our lives are similarly constrained.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"NW2C2XHIIJDM3IOFTX7LIA3ZUI\">\u201cThe audience is everyone and its purpose is not necessarily to connect toys, but to get us to think about the ways that things are designed to be non-compatible,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"IVFONWIF6VBOBLFZL2TJWGNX3A\">According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moma.org\/calendar\/exhibitions\/5756\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.moma.org\/calendar\/exhibitions\/5756\">MoMA website,<\/a> the exhibition highlights designs that experiment with new materials and technologies, offer fresh solutions to familiar challenges, and leave a lasting mark on both design and culture.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"3VKURSA7TREMLHP5KGU2J54QCM\">The works in \u201cPirouette\u201d underscore design\u2019s ability to channel human experience into form while reimagining how innovation can shape daily life and inspire a more inclusive future.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"QI4HZBD2DFGIZIYL2CAP7U6UKI\">Levin earned both his undergraduate and graduate degrees at the MIT Media Laboratory. <\/p>\n<p>If you purchase a product or register for an account through a link on our site, we may receive compensation.
