{"id":227144,"date":"2025-09-14T21:57:10","date_gmt":"2025-09-14T21:57:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/227144\/"},"modified":"2025-09-14T21:57:10","modified_gmt":"2025-09-14T21:57:10","slug":"robert-reich-doc-the-last-class-keeps-running","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/227144\/","title":{"rendered":"Robert Reich Doc \u2018The Last Class\u2019 Keeps Running"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tIn a complex indie market things do pop and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/the-last-class\/\" id=\"auto-tag_the-last-class\" data-tag=\"the-last-class\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Last Class<\/a><\/strong>, a documentary released in two theaters for limited runs on June 27, passed $610k this weekend, according to distributor <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/abramorama\/\" id=\"auto-tag_abramorama\" data-tag=\"abramorama\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Abramorama<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe documentary is pegged to social media star, academic and former Labor Secretary\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/robert-reich\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Robert Reich<\/a>, who has taught over 40,000 students over four decades, as he prepares to deliver his final class at UC Berkeley. The course, Wealth and Poverty, is a deep dive into income inequality and the risks it poses to American society.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe film, which hit $610k after a $12.8k weekend on 16 screens, has seen extended runs, bring backs, encores and interest that\u2019s unusual in the space, to the delight of Tom Hassell, Abramoram\u2019s VP of Distribution, director <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/elliot-kirschner\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Elliot Kirschner<\/a>, and producer Heather Kinlaw Lofthouse, the head of Reich\u2019s nonprofit Inequality Media. She founded CoffeeKlatch Productions with The Last Class as its first feature.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe film has had about 219 bookings so far, said Haskell, noting a few highlights: it played for eight weeks a the Quad in NYC, seven weeks in San Diego, four weeks at the Nuart in LA. It opened at Rialto Berkeley on July 1 and is still there. The Portland Museum of Art in Maine is having its biggest September ever on the film.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tIt skews older and \u201cwe\u2019ve had exhibitors raving about what it\u2019s done for their summers, since many of these patrons are back in the building for the first time in years, on top of the box office results,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tAbramorama announced it had acquired North American theatrical rights in April. The Last Class weathered a wave of rejections from film festivals before making its premiere in mid-June at DC\/DOX. In August, Reich\u2019s latest book Coming Up Short: A Memoir of My America, came out, topping the New York Times Bestseller List.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cI think people were missing how popular and revered and beloved Robert Reich is,\u201d said Kirschner. Reich, 79, has a large social media following including 1.32 million on his YouTube channel and 1.4 million on X (formerly Twitter).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tHe has been a prominent critic of Donald Trump, starting with the president\u2019s first term and continuing into his second. But Kirschner said The Last Class filmmakers \u201cunderstood the importance of not making it overly political, and giving hope to people.\u201d It\u2019s had holdovers in both red and blue states.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tJosh Melrod (Major Arcana) is a producer. Lofthouse and Ian Cheney (Observer,\u00a0The Most Unknown,\u00a0King Corn) are EPs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tReich served as secretary of labor under President Bill Clinton and on President-Elect Obama\u2019s transition advisory board. He has written eighteen books, including\u00a0The Work of Nations, which has been translated into 22 languages; the best-sellers\u00a0The Future of Success,\u00a0Locked in the Cabinet,\u00a0Supercapitalism, Aftershock,\u00a0\u00a0Beyond Outrage, The Common Good, Saving Capitalism, and The System.\u00a0He is co-founding editor of\u00a0The American Prospect\u00a0magazine and co-founder of the Economic Policy Institute.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t<strong>Limited openings<\/strong>: Mubi saw a nice debut for Oliver Hermanus\u2019 romance <strong>The History Of Soun<\/strong><strong>d<\/strong> with an estimated\u00a0$85.8k at\u00a04\u00a0theaters in New York and Los Angeles That\u2019s a per screen average of $21.4k for the Cannes-premiering film starring Paul Mescal and Josh O\u2019Connor that sold out multiple shows on both coasts ahead of its national expansion next weekend.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t<strong>Bang Bang<\/strong> starring Tim Blake Nelson opened to $12k on 4 screens with sold out Q&amp;A screenings in New York, LA and Des Moines. Released by Sunrise Films, the recently launched U.S. arm of U.K. distributor Vertigo Releasing,<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t<strong>Wide release<\/strong>: <strong>Spinal Tap 2: The End Continues <\/strong>opened at\u00a01,920 locations\u00a0in U.S. and Canada for a weekend gross of $1.67 million.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t<strong>Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale<\/strong> from Focus Features grossed $18.1 million from\u00a03,694\u00a0theatersand a no. 3 spot in the top ten.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tFathom Entertainment and Disney are projecting $1.49 million for the restored and remastered rerelease of <strong>The Sound Of Music<\/strong> for its 60th anniversary.
