in Kent with curved roof"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A pitched roof with a subtle curve subverts the otherwise traditional barn-like form of this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/houses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">house<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/Kent\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kent<\/a>, UK, designed by local studio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/andy-martin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Andy Martin Architecture<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Named Twisted House, the 290-square-metre family home replaces a two-bedroom timber bungalow on a three-hectare site in the village of Benenden.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.andymartinarchitecture.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Andy Martin Architecture<\/a> looked to &#8220;seamlessly connect&#8221; the home with its rural surroundings, basing its form on a typical agricultural barn and adding a roof that mirrors the site&#8217;s topography.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2246505 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/twisted-house-andy-martin-architects-architecture-residential-houses-kent_dezeen_2364_col_19-852x113.jpeg\" alt=\"Front elevation of Twisted House by Andy Martin Architects\" width=\"1773\" height=\"2364\"  \/>Andy Martin Architects has created Twisted House in Kent<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The house&#8217;s steel and timber superstructure echoes the form of a traditional local Kent blackened barns, blending into its setting across three hectares of picturesque countryside,&#8221; said the studio.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The end facades are clad in reclaimed chestnut, giving the building a timeless, rustic aesthetic while offsetting the dominant metal-clad elevations,&#8221; it added.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The roof design mirrors the undulating landscape, creating a sense of movement and harmony between the architecture and its natural surroundings.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2246503 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/twisted-house-andy-martin-architects-architecture-residential-houses-kent_dezeen_2364_col_17-852x639.jpeg\" alt=\"Exterior of Twisted House by Andy Martin Architects\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1773\"  \/>Its barn-like form is topped with a curved roof<\/p>\n<p>A central entry axis divides a garage and facilities block to the north of the site from the main home to the south, which opens into a double-height living, kitchen and dining area.<\/p>\n<p>In the living space, a large window in the gable end of Twisted House overlooks a newly created 400-square-metre pond, which was introduced to attract local wildlife and birds.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2246501 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/twisted-house-andy-martin-architects-architecture-residential-houses-kent_dezeen_2364_col_15-852x639.jpeg\" alt=\"Metal-clad house in Kent\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1773\"  \/>It features metal-clad elevations<\/p>\n<p>Folding doors allow the dining area to open onto a terrace to the south, while an area of timber decking that extends out over the pond can be accessed from the home&#8217;s garden.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The waterside decking allows the family to enjoy cold-water swimming or simply relax in nature,&#8221; said Andy Martin Architecture.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/03\/17\/threefold-architects-eight-gables-house\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/threefold-architects-eight-gables-home-uk-sq2_dezeen_2364_col_0-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"Eight Gables by Threefold Architects\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"  \/><\/p>\n<p> Threefold Architects puts modern spin on Tudor architecture for Eight Gables house\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This carefully integrated body of water encourages connection with the landscape and provides a retreat-like environment,&#8221; the studio added.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;[It] not only enhances the site&#8217;s biodiversity but also contributes to the home&#8217;s passive cooling system, using evaporative cooling in tandem with prevailing breezes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2246493 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/twisted-house-andy-martin-architects-architecture-residential-houses-kent_dezeen_2364_col_8-852x1136.jpeg\" alt=\"Living room of Twisted House by Andy Martin Architects\" width=\"1773\" height=\"2364\"  \/>The living spaces overlook a pond<\/p>\n<p>The four bedrooms of Twisted House are organised across its two-storey eastern end, illuminated by corner windows that unite the walls and roof.
