Now follow along throughout the night as our experts break down the 2025 Emmy Awards.<\/p>\n<p><b>6:08 p.m. <\/b>\u201cWhen was the last time a directing category had four women and one man?\u201d asks Elizabeth Banks, presentign the award for directing in a limited series. Not the best tee-up for that man, Phillip Barantini, who wins for \u201cAdolescence.\u201d But \u201cAdolescence\u201d was an astonishing piece of direction and I don\u2019t think we can hold it against him. \u2014 M.M.<\/p>\n<p>Nope. First Emmy for the night for \u201cAdolescence\u201d and it won\u2019t be the last. \u2014 G.W.<\/p>\n<p>A feat of one-shot filming and working with a young, previously non-professional cast. \u2014 M.M.<\/p>\n<p>Funny that we had back-to-back director winners for episodes that were essentially one-shot wonders. \u2014 G.W.<\/p>\n<p>Are you sensing a trend? \u2014 M.M.<\/p>\n<p><b>6:04 p.m. <\/b>After the Hiller win, I thought maybe Nathan Fielder had a shot at comedy series director. \u2014 G.W.<\/p>\n<p>And yet \u201cThe Studio\u2019s\u201d Seth Rogen, who said he has never won anything, just won his second Emmy with Evan Goldberg for directing in a comedy series. \u2014 M.M.<\/p>\n<p><b>6:00 p.m. <\/b>It\u2019s only been an hour but I have to say this show is moving pretty quickly and much more surprising than I thought it would be. \u2014 M.M.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s OK if the Emmys want to get in and out, though. And one truly OMG surprise \u2014 that\u2019s a good night. Especially when it was for a show we love so much. \u2014 G.W.<\/p>\n<p><b>5:57 p.m. <\/b>Hiller\u2019s win almost makes up for the Bates snub. Seriously, it is possibly my favorite Emmy moment ever. And i\u2019ve been doing this a very long time. Also can someone tell me who designed his suit, which is amazing? \u2014 M.M.<\/p>\n<p><b>5:53 p.m. <\/b>What is happening with the Emmy injury list? Sterling K. Brown on a medical scooter. I love that he left the little basket on it. \u2014 M.M.<\/p>\n<p>His character had to leave the bunker for second season of \u201cParadise.\u201d Apparently, it\u2019s rough out there! \u2014 G.W.<\/p>\n<p><b>5:51 p.m. <\/b>Reality competition presenter Leanne Morgan so distracted by Pedro Pascal she almost announced the winner before listing the nominees! And it\u2019s \u201cThe Traitors\u201d! Because Alan Cumming. \u2014 M.M.<\/p>\n<p>I have never watched \u201cTraitors,\u201d but I approve of Alan Cumming\u2019s mustache and accent. \u2014 G.W.<\/p>\n<p>            <img class=\"image\" alt=\"Hannah Einbinder wins her first Emmy for &quot;Hacks.&quot;\"   width=\"2000\" height=\"1334\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/1757898793_711_\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>         <\/p>\n<p>Hannah Einbinder wins her first Emmy for \u201cHacks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>(Myung J. Chun\/Los Angeles Times)<\/p>\n<p><b>5:44 p.m. <\/b>\u201cI was committed to the narrative that it\u2019s cooler to continue to lose\u201d: \u201cHack\u2019s\u201d Hannah Einbinder, who becomes the first winner to offer to pay the difference for her over-the-limit speech. Also first winner to make a political comment: \u201cFree Palestine.\u201d \u2014 M.M.<\/p>\n<p>I also loved Einbinder\u2019s speech and her offer to pay for going over. I feel like she got her money\u2019s worth. \u2014 G.W.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will find her later,\u201d Bargatze says. \u201cAlso she cursed and I will start a swear jar real fast.\u201d He is doing great. \u2014 M.M.<\/p>\n<p><b>5:41 p.m. <\/b>I do not intend this as shade or commentary, but I have never seen an episode of \u201cThe Golden Girls.\u201d You\u2019re gonna have to take it from here, Mary. (But Colin Farrell vibing to \u201cThank You For Being a Friend\u201d is now my No. 1 moment of the evening. \u2014 G.W.<\/p>\n<p>Colin Farrell doing anything on camera is my No. 1 moment of the evening. Like I am having a hard time paying attention to anything waiting to see if he will win for \u201cThe Penguin.\u201d \u2014 M.M.<\/p>\n<p>Haha &#8230; I hope he comes up and sings a verse of that song, even if it costs the charity some money. \u2014 G.W.<\/p>\n<p>I will pay for Colin Farrell to sing. I feel like we could whip up a Colin-Sings go fund me that would make Bargatze\u2019s 100 grand look like chump change. Cut the mike on that lyrical Irish accent and we will RIOT. \u2014 M.M. <\/p>\n<p>I never knew you were such a Colin Farrell fan, Mary! \u2014 G.W.<\/p>\n<p><b>5:39 p.m. <\/b>Kathy Bates, the odds-on favorite, is denied! Britt Lower wins lead actress drama for \u201cSeverance\u201d! \u2014 M.M.<\/p>\n<p>Kathy Bates did not look happy. I think she, like everyone else, thought that Emmy was hers. \u2014 G.W.<\/p>\n<p>The dangers of awards predictions! I am personally heart-broken. Chun\/Los Angeles Times)<\/p>\n<p><b>5:35 p.m. <\/b>Tillman\u2019s win also quickly dispels fears of an #EmmysSoWhite shutout of actors of color, but it is worth acknowledging that Bargatze\u2019s opening joke about CBS being the Caucasian Broadcasting System is regrettably mirrored by a notable lack of diversity among this year\u2019s nominees. \u2014 M.M.<\/p>\n<p>The best line in that opening sketch was Bowen Yang asking about an Asian television network when they were running down how there was a channel for everyone. And Bargatze quickly changed the subject to streaming. \u2014 G.W.<\/p>\n<p><b>5:32 p.m. <\/b>\u201cSeverance\u2019s\u201d Tramell Tillman wins for supporting actor in a drama. And does what every award winner should do \u2014 thank his mother. (If you are thanking your mother, the time does not count.) \u2014 M.M.<\/p>\n<p>And there goes \u201cThe White Lotus\u2019\u201d last remaining Emmy chance. Tillman was so strong on the second season of \u201cSeverance,\u201d revealing Mr. Milchick\u2019s vulnerabilities and internal conflicts. Glad he won. Strike up the band! \u2014G.W.<\/p>\n<p><b>5:29 p.m. <\/b>Ha! I do think we need to have a conversation about how much time is being spent telling people to keep their acceptance speeches short. Too much time I fear. Someone like LaNasa should not be shamed! I mean it is an awards show. Chun\/Los Angeles Times)<\/p>\n<p><b>5:26 p.m. <\/b>Katherine LaNasa wins supporting actress in a drama for \u201cThe Pitt\u201d! Breaking through \u201cThe White Lotus\u201d crowd in the category. Is this going to be a \u201cPitt\u201d sweep? \u2014 M.M.<\/p>\n<p>Maaaaybe? I just know you\u2019re thrilled Mary for the possibility of a \u201cWhite Lotus\u201d shutout. I wondered if Carrie Coon and Parker Posey would split the vote, giving LaNasa a much-deserved trophy. \u2014 G.W.<\/p>\n<p><b>5:22 p.m. <\/b>Smart is half-way to Julia Louis-Dreyfus\u2019 six consecutive Emmys for \u201cVeep.\u201d \u2014 M.M.<\/p>\n<p>More than half! That\u2019s four straight for \u201cHacks.\u201d She has won for every season of the show. \u2014 G.W.<\/p>\n<p><b>5:20 p.m. <\/b>Even Jean Smart is like, \u201cEnough, already.\u201d \u2014 G.W.<\/p>\n<p>Jean Smart was literally in the wings \u2014 that\u2019s how sure they were she was going to win female lead in comedy. (In truth she broke her knee, so \u201cjust in case\u201d they spared her the walk.) \u2014M.M.<\/p>\n<p><b>5:18 p.m. <\/b>Did Jennifer Coolidge just make first colonoscopy joke in history of Emmys? \u2014 M.M.<\/p>\n<p>Good thing Jennifer Coolidge isn\u2019t winning this year. The charity fund would be in the red. \u2014G.W.<\/p>\n<p><b>5:13 p.m. <\/b>I\u2019m a Bargatze agnostic. But if this plan works and keeps speeches short, he will go down in history. Maybe not like George Washington, but still &#8230; \u2014 G.W.<\/p>\n<p>The part where Bargatze has to pay more if the speech goes under. I can\u2019t wait til Harrison Ford just waves. We honestly could be out of here in an hour. \u2014 M.M.<\/p>\n<p>Nominees just took out there speeches, giving them a second look. Life is good. \u201cWhile I have your attention, is anyone hiring?\u201d He presents Seth Rogen of \u201cThe Studio\u201d with the award for lead actor in a comedy. With \u201cThe Studio\u201d vs. \u201cHacks,\u201d it\u2019s a big night for fictional Hollywood. \u2014M.M.<\/p>\n<p>Great planning on the part of the producers. Start the show off with Rogen winning an Emmy &#8230; you know he\u2019s going to be fun &#8230; and he was, even if he didn\u2019t know what to say. \u2014 G.W.<\/p>\n<p><b>5:04 p.m. <\/b>And it\u2019s a skit! Echoing his \u201cSNL\u201d performance as George Washington, Bargatze is Philo T. Farnsworth, who is in fact known as the \u201cfather of television.\u201d \u2014 M.M.<\/p>\n<p>Love Bargatze leaning into that Washington sketch. Still can\u2019t let go of \u201cThe Bear\u201d being classified as a comedy. It is confusing! \u2014 G.W.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe create a world in which a woman hosts a late night talk show. I just flew in from Washington where my niece, Meghan, tied the knot with the delightful Tommy. All I have in my stomach is the rum and coke my neighbor handed me when I got home. \u2014 G.W.<\/p>\n<p>Oooo. This should be fun. The rum-and-coke Glenn is the best Glenn. Also, where do you live that neighbors just hand you rum and cokes when you arrive from the airport? \u2014 M.M.<\/p>\n<p>Sadly, not Jamaica &#8230; though I\u2019m making that a goal should be doing this next year. \u2014 G.W.<\/p>\n<p><b>4:49 p.m. <\/b>Do you really think \u201cThe Pitt\u201d is going to win best drama? Over \u201cSeverance\u201d? I feel like that category has the opportunity to surprise, but I bow to your odds-making track record. \u2014 M.M.<\/p>\n<p>I picked \u201cSeverance,\u201d Mary. It received 27 nominations to 13 for \u201cThe Pitt.\u201d But upsets are often rooted in emotions. And no series provoked more of an emotional response this year. So I\u2019d be happy to be wrong and have \u201cThe Pitt\u201d prevail. \u2014 G.W.<\/p>\n<p>So you are essentially betting each way. I confess I am anxious to see if the recently canceled \u201cThe Late Show With Stephen Colbert\u201d wins and what Colbert will have to say if it does. \u2014 M.M. <\/p>\n<p>Haha &#8230; no &#8230; I picked \u201cSeverance.\u201d But \u201cThe Pitt\u201d winning would not be shocking. And I\u2019d be there for it. \u2014 G.W.<\/p>\n<p><b>4:45 p.m. <\/b>Hello, Mary! Here we are again, another Emmys, another opportunity for you to lament that \u201cSlow Horses\u201d isn\u2019t going to win best drama series. At least \u201cSlow Horses\u201d has won an Emmy (writing), something the late, great \u201cBetter Call Saul\u201d never managed to do from 53 (!) nominations.<\/p>\n<p>But that\u2019s the past and we\u2019re not here to relitigate. Let\u2019s focus on the here and now. Did \u201cThe Pitt\u201d wring enough tears to take the drama series Emmy? Is there anything left for Jean Smart to say other than \u201cthank you\u201d when she wins a fourth Emmy for \u201cHacks\u201d? Will the traditionally taciturn Harrison Ford say anything other than \u201cthank you\u201d if he wins his first Emmy for \u201cShrinking\u201d?<\/p>\n<p>What questions are you mulling over as we await the ceremony to begin, my friend? \u2014 G.W.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow\u2019s Nate Bargatze going to do?\u201d is the initial question. As I <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/tv\/story\/2025-09-10\/nate-bargatze-emmys-host\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">noted in an earlier column<\/a>, his non-Hollywood, down-home, every-guy persona makes him quite a departure from past Emmy hosts. He is also rigorously non-political, and has said he will not be mentioning the recent killing of conservative influencer Charlie Kirk. Given the maelstrom of political vitriol over reactions (and non-reactions) to the tragedy, I do not envy him walking into this moment, but if anyone can sell the need for, and importance of, non-politically charged entertainment, it\u2019s Bargatze.<\/p>\n<p>Other than that, I am still holding out hope for Gary Oldman and \u201cSlow Horses\u201d to prevail (just as my daughters are rooting for Pedro Pascal and <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/tv\/story\/2025-04-11\/the-last-of-us-season-1-recap\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cThe Last of Us\u201d<\/a>) and very much looking forward to seeing <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/awards\/story\/2025-08-14\/kathy-bates-matlock-jason-segel-shrinking-envelope-video-podcast\" data-autoplayable-video=\"true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kathy Bates<\/a> win \u2014 I love \u201cMatlock\u201d and not just because it serves as a welcome reminder that older women deserve the same kind of roles that older men have long enjoyed. \u2014 M.M.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"We\u2019ve celebrated the nominations, predicted the winners and gotten all glammed up.
