Since its July divorce with center forward Milan Iloski<\/a>, San Diego FC has received just one goal at Iloski\u2019s spot and scored at a much lower rate in the nine games.<\/p>\n

But because it also has slashed its goals-allowed rate, the first-year soccer club has sustained its average of 1.9 points per match to stay atop the 15-team Western Conference.<\/p>\n

Numerous variables outside of SDFC\u2019s center-forward play have affected SDFC\u2019s play since a financial impasse sent Esconido\u2019s Iloski back to Denmark in mid-July. He has since returned to Major League Soccer with the Eastern Conference-leading Philadelphia Union.<\/p>\n

Even if a deal had been worked out, Iloski was unlikely to continue his white-hot pace of 10 goals scored over 479 minutes in 14 matches. Within that sun-burst flurry, the MLS rookie tallied four goals across 12 minutes at first-place Vancouver.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat probably will never be done again in MLS,\u201d club general manager Tyler Heaps said after the sides\u2019 fruitless talk led to Iloski\u2019s departure.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s probable, though, that if a contract with Iloski had been reached, San Diego\u2019s offense would have more sparkle.<\/p>\n

Iloski had meshed with several teammates. He appeared in peak fitness.<\/p>\n

The most capable candidate on the roster to replace Iloski was Marcus Ingvartsen, 29, the starter whose April injury led Heaps to get Iloski on loan from SDFC\u2019s sister club in Denmark.<\/p>\n

Ingvartsen returned Aug. 12 against San Jose. He played midfielder that night, and he looked like himself. Physical and savvy, the 6-foot-1\u00bd\u00a0 Dane had an assist and a goal in a 2-1 road victory.<\/p>\n

But Ingvartsen hasn\u2019t returned to the game roster.<\/p>\n

San Diego FC has received a number of dangerous shots and other moments of flair from three others who\u2019ve piled up minutes at center forward in this stretch, but it has received no goals or assists.<\/p>\n

Tom\u00e1s \u00c1ngel, who\u2019d played often at wing, started the four games after Iloski\u2019s exit. The 22-year-old Colombian pressed well as a defender but was more effective at wing.<\/p>\n

In recent weeks, Heaps imported two MLS players with center-forward experience: Escondido native Corey Baird, 29, and Norway\u2019s Amahl Pelligrino, 35.<\/p>\n

They\u2019ve each played in three matches, about the number Iloski needed to acclimate. Saturday, each newcomer flashed some skill.<\/p>\n

The 6-3 Pelligrino, crashing the net, one-touched a crosser flush from eight yards (it was blocked). Baird, who at 5-10 is similar to Iloski in stature, flicked a clever header a foot wide of the far post.<\/p>\n

But post-Iloski, only Anders Dreyer, the star wing, has scored from the center-forward position.<\/p>\n

None of Iloski\u2019s replacements have matched his fit within the attack, his dribbling or the sure touch that the 5-9 1\/2 UCLA alum displayed as Ingvartsen\u2019s stand-in.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s also true that Dreyer and SDFC\u2019s other star wing, Hirving \u201cChucky\u201d Lozano, have mustered numerous threats without an established center forward.<\/p>\n

And Saturday night, the adaptive ability of San Diego\u2019s coach, Mikey Varas, drew strong praise from visiting coach Eric Ramsay following Minnesota United\u2019s 3-1 victory in Mission Valley<\/a>. SDFC continues to pose challenges with its high-press and ball-control game, Ramsay said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think that\u2019s obviously a problem position for them in the sense that they don\u2019t have a natural No. 9 (center-forward) fit other than Baird, who came on toward the end (Saturday),\u201d Ramsay said. \u201cIloski, he\u2019s not a 9 in the same way that (Minnesota\u2019s) Kelvin Yeboah is. Or Tani Oluwayesi, the 9 that we sold to Villareal (of Spain\u2019s top league). But, certianly he\u2019s a very good goal-scorer and certainly had a really good knack for movement and finishing.<\/p>\n

\u201cObviously, they\u2019ve got the two guys on each side and possibly (are) missing that piece down the middle a little bit. But, every other coach in the league would (love to have) Dreyer and Lozano, irrespective of what else you\u2019ve got. It\u2019s an impressive set of players, for sure.\u201d<\/p>\n

As the 34-game MLS season crawls toward the playoffs, which will begin in late October, SDFC (17-8-5) is one of several contenders that\u2019s navigating flux \u2014 some of it good \u2014 at a forward spot.<\/p>\n

Minnesota, which sits two points behind SDFC, got a reported $8.5 million for Oluwayesi last month, but thus was tasked with replacing its leader in both goals and assists.<\/p>\n

Third-place Vancouver, which is four points behind SDFC but has played two fewer games, sold its best midfielder, Pedro Vite, to Mexico\u2019s Pumas for $4.5 million in July. The club recently imported German great Thomas M\u00fcller.<\/p>\n

M\u00fcller notched a hat trick Saturday in his league debut and Vancouver dismantled Philadelphia\u2019s top-ranked defense on the way to a 7-0 win. The showing on M\u00fcller\u2019s 36th birthday did not reflect well on MLS quality.<\/p>\n

The bottom line here: Iloski isn\u2019t coming back to Mission Valley \u2026 unless SDFC and Philadelphia meet in the MLS Cup.<\/p>\n

Can someone else make the most of a great opportunity?<\/p>\n
