And temperatures this June, July and August were especially warm at night. <\/p>\n<p>From 1991 to 2020, the average low temperature June through August in Phoenix was 82.2 degrees. The average low temperature June through August this year was 84.7 degrees, according to National Weather Service records.<\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"Image\" alt=\"The average low temperature for June, July and August in Phoenix is increasing.\"  width=\"880\" height=\"360\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/1757940074_176_\"\/><\/p>\n<p>National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration<\/p>\n<p>         The average low temperature for June, July and August in Phoenix is increasing. <\/p>\n<p>And, since the 1990s, typically the low temperature has been above 90 degrees about seven times per year. This summer, Phoenix had more than triple that, with 23 nights in the 90s.<\/p>\n<p>The only summers with more 90-degree lows were all within the last five years \u2014 2020 had 28 nights in the 90s, 2023 had 35 and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kjzz.org\/kjzz-news\/2024-08-21\/phoenix-has-broken-the-record-for-most-nights-with-low-temperatures-in-the-90s\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">2024 had 39<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"Image\" alt=\"\"  width=\"880\" height=\"659\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/1757940075_579_\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Arizona climatologist Erinanne Saffell said human-caused climate change and drier-than-average monsoon seasons are part of the reason why summer nights have been so much hotter in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the summer, when we have clear kinds of conditions \u2014 so when we don\u2019t have an active monsoon season \u2014 the potential to get those nighttime temperatures hotter is there,\u201d Saffell said.<\/p>\n<p>And Saffell said the urbanization of the Phoenix area has accelerated the trend.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose parking lots and roads and cement sidewalks, they store that sunlight and they release it very slowly at night. It makes those nighttime temperatures hotter,\u201d Saffell said.<\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"Image\" alt=\"\"  width=\"880\" height=\"679\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/1757940077_985_\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Graphic by Chelsey Heath\/KJZZ<\/p>\n<p>Saffell said the urban heat island effect is warming overnight temperatures even in areas with much smaller populations than metro Phoenix.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve measured that in Sedona, it\u2019s being measured in Yuma right now,\u201d Saffell said. \u201cWhen you\u2019re having roads and buildings \u2014 that holds onto that sunlight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Saffell said future summers could bring even more nights in the 90s to the Phoenix area.<\/p>\n<p>Utilities say hot summer nights <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kjzz.org\/kjzz-news\/2025-07-10\/aps-srp-report-highest-ever-energy-demand-on-118-degree-day-in-metro-phoenix\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">drive up demand for air conditioning<\/a>. And biologists say the hot nights <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kjzz.org\/2023-08-21\/content-1855390-researchers-are-looking-ways-protect-saguaros-climate-threats\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">stress vegetation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But Saffell said her greatest concern with the increase in 90-degree lows is an<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kjzz.org\/news\/2024-07-08\/how-much-more-dangerous-is-110-than-105-a-lot-data-shows\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> increased health risk<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe pay attention to that particularly because we want everyone to be safe,\u201d Saffell said. \u201cIf you\u2019re not able to cool off effectively at night, that can become problematic.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"This summer was one of the hottest on record in Phoenix.
