{"id":22943,"date":"2025-06-28T22:36:12","date_gmt":"2025-06-28T22:36:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/22943\/"},"modified":"2025-06-28T22:36:12","modified_gmt":"2025-06-28T22:36:12","slug":"ottawa-orders-chinese-tech-firm-to-close-canadian-operations-over-national-security-national","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/22943\/","title":{"rendered":"Ottawa orders Chinese tech firm to close Canadian operations over national security &#8211; National"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The federal government has ordered a Chinese maker of surveillance camera systems to shutter its Canadian business and leave the country over <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/national-security\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">national security<\/a> concerns.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Industry Minister M\u00e9lanie Joly said in a post on X late Friday that the orders issued to <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/hikvision\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hikvision<\/a> Canada Inc. are the result of a national security review under the Investment Canada Act.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the review, Joly said the government looked at information and evidence provided by Canada\u2019s security and intelligence community.<\/p>\n<p>The government ultimately determined allowing the company to keep operating in Canada would be harmful for the country\u2019s national security, she said.<\/p>\n<p>Hikvision, whose formal name is Hangzhou Hikvision Digital Technology Co. Ltd., describes itself as the world\u2019s largest manufacturer of surveillance equipment. It\u2019s had a Canadian subsidiary since 2014.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>In the U.S., Australia and the U.K., the business and its subsidiaries have faced a battery of sanctions. The Investment Canada Act allows the government to probe any foreign investment with potential to harm national security and order any company found posing a risk to the country to \u201cwith deep concern.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe believe it lacks a factual basis, procedural fairness, and transparency,\u201d Hikvision said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInstead of evaluating our technology on its cybersecurity merits, the decision appears to be driven by the parent company\u2019s country of origin, reflecting broader geopolitical tensions and an unjustified bias against cooperated with all government parties, providing them with timely and comprehensive responses along with detailed documentation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDespite these efforts, the government imposed its government to base its actions on facts rather than prejudice, and to uphold a fair, transparent environment for all businesses and investors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On top of ordering Hikvision Canada to shut down, Joly said she is also moving to ensure the federal government, its departments, agencies and Crown corporations do not use or purchase equipment from the company.<\/p>\n<p>She said the government is also conducting a review of its properties to ensure legacy Hikvision products are not used going forward.<\/p>\n<p>However, she stopped short of urging them to stop using Hikvision
