{"id":229592,"date":"2025-09-15T20:34:15","date_gmt":"2025-09-15T20:34:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/229592\/"},"modified":"2025-09-15T20:34:15","modified_gmt":"2025-09-15T20:34:15","slug":"cal-poly-student-creates-italian-riviera-inspired-lego-set-nbc-los-angeles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/229592\/","title":{"rendered":"Cal Poly student creates Italian Riviera-inspired LEGO set \u2013 NBC Los Angeles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>What began as a childhood hobby turned into something much bigger for Oregon native Alex Sahli.<\/p>\n<p>Sahli, a junior studying computer science at Cal Poly, has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbclosangeles.com\/news\/business\/money-report\/lego-is-reinventing-its-iconic-brick-sets-and-keeping-the-toy-industry-afloat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">building LEGO sets<\/a> his entire life. His first set belonged to his mom, originally purchased in 1981.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;[It&#8217;s] what got me hooked,&#8221; Sahli told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kgw.com\/article\/news\/local\/portland-alex-sahli-lego-design-inspired-italian-riveria-hits-store-shelves\/283-769d4467-21f6-4d22-8eab-f5e6a958d940\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NBC affiliate KGW<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>He&#8217;s assembled everything from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lego.com\/en-us\/product\/back-to-the-future-time-machine-10300\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">DeLorean from &#8220;Back to the Future&#8221;<\/a> to the Titanic to the Saturn 5 rocket.<\/p>\n<p>One of his most recent assemblies didn&#8217;t come with instructions.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s because the Italian Riviera-inspired playset was something Sahli designed and submitted to LEGO. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/f5891231-b4b9-482b-9049-c9c77bec4bd6-original-0x0_720.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"100%\"\/>Italian Riviera LEGO set. (LEGO Group)<\/p>\n<p>In anticipation for a trip he had planned to Italy&#8217;s Cinque Terre, Sahli began creating the LEGO set in 2022 based on his research of the region.<\/p>\n<p>Once finished to his liking, the Italian Riviera village model was sent in to LEGO designers for consideration and received the necessary 10,000 votes to be approved for production.  <\/p>\n<p>Sahli was surprised the 3,251-piece set was such a hit. He thought it was a cool idea but was &#8220;worried they wouldn&#8217;t approve it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The LEGO design team helped Sahli perfect the final product to include the regions famous vibrant house colors and to feature a small figure of Sahli holding a camera \u2014 another one of his hobbies.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0px\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/8dec503d-fe22-492e-acaa-7c6b777110bc-original-0x0_720.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"100%\"\/>The set includes a figure of Sahli holding a camera (LEGO Group)<\/p>\n<p>Three years after submitting his original designs online, Sahli&#8217;s LEGO creation is finally being <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lego.com\/en-us\/product\/italian-riviera-21359\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sold in stores and online worldwide for $299.99<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"What began as a childhood hobby turned into something much bigger for Oregon native Alex Sahli.
