The afterschool youth programming nonprofit is now seeing a donation surge after a controversial fundraising bit at the center of television\u2019s biggest night.<\/p>\n<p>Emmys <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/nate-bargatze-2025-emmy-awards-c1e27164c0723c4b5c2988d4c586d99d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">host Nate Bargatze<\/a> pledged $100,000 to the group at the top of the telecast \u2014 with a twist. The comedian then deducted $1,000 for every second that an acceptance speech exceeded the allotted time and added the same amount for every second under the limit. Boys &amp; Girls Clubs children stood with the trophy holder for each announcement before retreating into the wings.<\/p>\n<p>The charitable gag failed to restrain many winners. \u201cHacks\u201d star <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/hannah-einbinder-hacks-everything-must-go-comedy-special-80143c78a4b81f11e8e12bbfb3ad71ad\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hannah Einbinder<\/a> vowed \u201cI\u2019ll pay the difference\u201d while accepting the award for outstanding supporting actress in a comedy series. \u201cWe (expletive) over the Boys &amp; Girls,\u201d comedian Seth Rogen said as the ticker plunged deeper into the negatives. With the show nearly over, the sum had fallen below zero to negative $60,000.<\/p>\n<p>The Boys &amp; Girls Clubs \u201cwere waiting to see the outcome in real time, like everyone else,\u201d Lisa Anastasi, the organization\u2019s chief development and external relations officer, said Monday in an email. They <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/nate-bargatze-2025-emmy-awards-c1e27164c0723c4b5c2988d4c586d99d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ultimately received what Anastasi called a \u201cgenerous surprise\u201d<\/a>: $250,000 from Bargatze and $100,000 from broadcaster CBS.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe number, I\u2019ll be honest with you, was embarrassing,\u201d Bargatze said before announcing the final amount.<\/p>\n<p>And the nationwide nonprofit is still reaping the benefits. Donation totals have more than doubled compared to this time last week and its search interest is at a record high, according to Anastasi.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe $350,000 donation will be incredibly impactful to our programs and in the lives of kids and teens who attend our Clubs,\u201d Anastasi said. \u201cBut this moment was about more than the donation for us \u2014 it was also special because it placed our mission and our Club Kids on a national stage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some viewers applauded the altruistically minded mockery of long-winded Hollywood elites. Not all in the worlds of entertainment and philanthropy were equally enthused, though.<\/p>\n<p>A Variety columnist said the running joke turned artists\u2019 moments of celebration into ones \u201cthey\u2019ll remember for having been policed in the most sanctimonious and irritating manner possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Generosity is not about gimmicks, according to fundraising strategist T. Clay Buck.
