HOBOKEN, New Jersey (WABC) — Crews are working to repair a water main break that has shut down several streets in Hoboken, New Jersey, according to city officials.<\/p>\n
NewsCopter 7 was above the 10-inch water main break near the intersection of Madison Street and Seventh Street.<\/p>\n
Hoboken officials say a contractor on private property struck the line Monday.<\/p>\n
Seventh Street is closed between Jackson and Madison streets while Veolia Water NJ works on repairs.<\/p>\n
“That was an old church. I felt pretty bad when they knocked it down. And so I said to her, Maybe it’s karma for knocking down a church,” Brian Frino, a Hoboken resident, said.<\/p>\n
Just a few feet away at the same intersection, another team was trying to work on the sewage line and had to wait until the water receded to fill in the holes.<\/p>\n
Officials say while crews work to isolate the main break, residents in the vicinity may experience water pressure fluctuations while repairs are underway.<\/p>\n
Officials are asking people to avoid the area.<\/p>\n
It’s unclear if the break is affecting the water service for residents in the area.<\/p>\n
Just last week in Hoboken, two separate pipes broke on the same day.<\/p>\n
“This just happened like last week. We didn’t have water. We had to boil. We were on a boil water advisory and then for like two days. So it’s like I mean, we’re used to it now, I guess,” a Hoboken resident said.<\/p>\n
Whether the breaks are caused by human error or old age, the problem is, there’s miles of ancient water mains underground, likely to crack again before the whole infrastructure can be upgraded.<\/p>\n
